The year of Luigi was still in effect during this latest Nintendo Direct stream held today. Satoru Iwata announced an exclusive eShop title for the Wii U called Dr Luigi. As its name suggest, this new title will follow the same style of gameplay from the Tetris style game Dr Mario.

Dr Luigi will feature four different game modes from online to single player virus battling. Operation L, Retro Remedy, Virus Buster, and Online Battle.

The standard single player mode, called Operation L, will feature Dr Mario style gameplay but with new shapes to work with. Two pills combined to make an L shape. This adds a new dimension of gameplay that Iwata hopes will spark new interest from old fans.

For die-hard fans of the original Dr Mario, Dr Luigi features a mode fit for the old style. Retro Remedy brings the standard single pill system back with new modes and new graphics.

Virus Buster, which was featured in the Nintendo DS game series Brain Age, will also be a throwback to the original. However now the game will be playable on the gamepad in a vertical position and using the touch screen.

The final mode featured in the announcement was Online Battle. Dr Luigi features local versus, but in this new mode, people across the world can battle against each other in virus killing competition.

Look forward to Dr Luigi to hit the Wii U eShop on December 31st. Be sure to let us know in the comments below if you like this new take on the Dr Mario franchise!
