Final Fantasy Agito, the latest game in the Fabula Nova Crystallis sub-franchise, has now released in Japan exclusively on iOS devices.
It marks the end of a rather interesting turn for the game, which does still bears a resemblance to the original game that was dubbed as Final Fantasy Agito XIII and was planned to release on mobile devices. That was re-purposed as Final Fantasy Type-0 and developed for the PSP and following its release Final Fantasy Agito resurfaced as a new independent game that takes place in the same universe.
Taking place in the land of Orience, Final Fantasy Agito is free-to-play and acts as a prequel to Type-0. You play as a "Cadet" who enters the Rubrum Magical Academy at a time of war and are chosen to become an Agito - someone who is destined to save the world. It's all rather foreboding, but it does stay true to Tabata's original concept.
The battle system is all touch based and there's quite a wide range of customsation. To accompany the release of the game, Square Enix released numerous videos explaining how everything works - these can be seen at our sister site, Final Fantasy Union.
It's still too early to say whether we will be seeing Final Fantasy Agito in the West. However, there is always hope. Who knows, while they're at it they might release Type-0 on the PS Vita. If you're interested in downloading the Japanese version, you can do so from the Japanese iTunes.
