Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be released for PS4, Xbox One and PC, Activision has announced. The publisher has yet to confirm if the sequel will be skipping on the last gen versions.
Taking take place after the events of Black Ops 2's 21st century cold war, Call of Duty: Black Ops III will show a dark, gritty future. This is a time in which soldiers are heavily augmented with cybernetic limbs.
Unlike recent entries in the series, the campaign in Black Ops III is designed to be fully playable in both single-player and online co-op up to four players. The game will offer several customization options for both campaign and multiplayer, which include appearance, weapons, abilities, and for the first time in the series, choosing your character's gender.
"Rather than going for the multiple storyline concept, we've gone for a more layered approach," said campaign director Jason Blundell. "There's reasons why going back to the campaign multiple times, with new perspectives, new stuff can be learned. We've put our time and energies into our writing and our character development and the visual sequences there to hold up for multiple analysis, multiple revisits, that's where we put the energy this time."
"We knew we were going to do fully unique male, fully unique female for all scenes and all the customization that goes for both. Thank God for Blu-ray, right?" Blundell added.
Regarding character classes, the game will feature nine different classes, each with its own special abilitiy and weapon. Only four classes have been revealed so far: Outrider, Reaper, Seraph and Ruin.
Zombies are also returning and with its own XP-based progression system. Activision promises that this mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be "totally unique, mind-blowing".
"Black Ops Zombies will have its own full, player XP based progression system. That will add even more depth and replayability to what was already an inherently and really replayable mode," said studio head Mark Lamia. "It's not like anything in the campaign and it's not like anything in the multiplayer. It's its own game that ships with Black Ops 3."
"We know that Zombies is a very easy mode to get into, very accessible. We've got to be sure not to sacrifice that while we're adding depth and replayability to it. We're going to deliver a totally unique, mind-blowing creative. It's not like anything in the campaign and it's not like anything in the multiplayer. It's its own game that ships with Black Ops 3."
