NIS America has announced that a closed beta of the upcoming tactical RPG Grand Kingdom will be held earlier next month. In order to get access to the beta, players will just have register on the Grand Kingdom website.
The closed beta will be available exclusively on PS4 and it will run from May 3rd to May 10th. It will give players access to two campaign quests and the Fighter, Hunter, Witch and Medic classes. A multiplayer component is also included, however, this mode will be a bit more restricted, as players can only participate in three battles per day. Progress in campaign will carry over to the full game, which means that you get to keep your mercenary money and squad members.
Speaking of classes, the game features three basic class types that work similat to a 'rock-paper-scissors' mechanic: Melee, Ranged, and Magic units. There's also the Specialist units that fulfill very specific roles in battle.
Melee units are characterized by their high attack and defense, and their Guard abilitiy that negates all damage up to a certain point. However, these have low magic defense, which makes them an easy target for Magic units.
The biggest advantage of ranged units is the fact they can attack from anywhere on the battlefield, giving them the edge over enemies at the back of the formation, such as mages when they are are charging magical attacks. Low defense is the weak point of these units, which means it's crucial to keep them far from close combat.
Magic units have medium attack range, and use ranged attacks that can affect multiple enemies. Some of their more powerful skills must be charged before they can be used, leaving them vulnerable to disruption from an enemy's ranged attack.
Specialist units are unique in comparision to other class types, as they have individualized abilities that can be a great asset in battle, but their specialized nature affords little room for flexibility.
