Nearly a year after its official reveal, Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts Unchained X will release in North America this week, on the 7th of April. No word yet on an release date for Europe.

Kingdom Hearts Unchained X takes place many years before the events of the other games in the franchise, during an era before the Keyblade War. In this era where Keyblade wielders was a common thing, the player plays as one of these keyblade wielders. You will witness all the events related to the origin story of Kingdom Hearts, such as the Foretellers and their Unions, as well as the origins of the Keyblade war.

Director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Unchained X is related too all three titles in Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD Final Chapter Prologue, which includes Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance HD, Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep. The most prominent connection is Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover, with Nomura explaining that while in Unchained X the events before the Keyblade War are seen from the player's perspective, Back Cover depicts these events from the perspective of the Foretellers.

Nomura also left a message for fans in the West, hoping that players enjoy this new adventure in the franchise. "I hope fans and newcomers alike will find themselves absorbed in this brand new adventure that reveals the origins of Kingdom Hearts."

Kingdom Hearts Unchained X will be available to download for free on iOS and Android.
