Top Ten RPGs Of This Generation... So Far

Sat, Aug 28th, 2010, 12:46 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

This console generation has seen a remarkable shift in what it means to be a role-playing game. Elements that have traditionally been exclusive to RPGs - such as leveling/upgrading characters and equipment, branching, non-linear plots, and collectible items - have begun to be incorporated in numerous other genres, blurring the lines between them. However, the core RPG genre remains intact, featuring a wide variety of the best Western and Eastern game designers have to offer. This is Gaming Union's top ten RPGs of this console generation (roughly 2005 to present), in alphabetical order.

E3 2010: Fallout New Vegas Hands-On Preview

Tue, Jun 29th, 2010, 12:18 pm (EST) BY ALEX

The eagerly anticipated 'sequel' to 2008's Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas was showcased at Bethesda’s booth at E3 2010. It isn't exactly a sequel per se, as the story has no correlation to Fallout 3's, taking place three years after the events in Fallout 3, and 39 years after those in Fallout 2. Fallout 3 changed a lot about the Fallout universe, and New Vegas will still reflect many of those changes, though Obsidian is bringing us back to the west coast. Can they strike gold in the Mojave desert?

Prospects are looking good for New Vegas. As it uses the same engine as Fallout 3, not too much has changed, though a few changes have been added, such as the ability to aim down the iron sights on many guns. Another addition is the Reputation system, which functions similar to Karma in FO3, although the Karma system will return, it won't affect relations with NPCs, that job is left to Reputation. Plenty of new guns have been added as well, along with new reloading animations too. Some weapons have extra modes in VATS, although the only ones seen firsthand were a golf club with the ability called "Fore!", which hits the opponent in the groin, and your fists, with an uppercut ability. Brink is an upcoming first person shooter developed by Splash Damage and published by Bethesda. Set on a floating city called the Ark, a 'utopia' that houses the remnants of Humanity on a flooded Earth, players choose a side from either the Security or the Resistance. Both of these forces think they are protecting the people of the Ark, with the Security keeping order as it is, and the Resistance trying to gain equality for everyone. More »

Fallout: New Vegas To Use Steam Platform

Wed, Jun 9th, 2010, 4:58 pm (EST) BY ALEX

Fallout: New Vegas will be fully integrated into Steam upon release. What exactly does this mean, though? On a post on Bethesda's official forum, Senior Producer Jason Bergman explains that, "Fallout: New Vegas uses Steamworks for achievements and other features (such as friends lists, cloud storage of user preferences and so on). Use of Steam will be mandatory at retail. So what does that mean? We’ve implemented Steamworks in as light and unobtrusive a way as possible. Yes, you will have to install Steam when you install Fallout: New Vegas if you don’t already have it." More »

E3 2010 Preview: Bethesda

Mon, Jun 7th, 2010, 7:57 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

E3 is fast approaching! Those of us lucky enough to attend are starting to feel the weight of this beast of a games expo coming down on us, or maybe that's just me. Gaming Union's publisher preview series started off with a little Japanese company you may have heard of, Capcom. Next on the list is Bethesda Softworks, probably best known for the Elder Scrolls RPG series and more recently Fallout 3. Bethesda has revealed their lineup for the show floor, but what surprises will be in store behind closed doors, and at the major press conferences?

As mentioned above, Bethesda recently released their booth lineup for E3 which includes heavy hitters such as Fallout: New Vegas and Rage, as well as relative unknowns Brink and Hunted: The Demon's Forge. The next iteration in the Fallout series, New Vegas, is being developed by Obsidian - which is composed of some of the team behind the original Fallout games. Hopefully, New Vegas turns out better than Obsidian's last project, Alpha Protocol. Rage is also expected to have a big showing at this year's show. The hybrid shooter-racer from id Software has been through numerous changes throughout its development cycle, now slated for a 2011 release. The game is being spearheaded by John Carmack, the man behind Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein, so there's reason to be optimistic. More »

New RPG on DS Brings Astounding Graphics and More

Posted on 2009/09/10 BY KYLE WYNEN

The Nintendo DS is not at all synonymous with games that have good 3D graphics. Buzzwords like Frames Per Second, Dynamic Lighting, and Draw Distance are seemingly foreign to the DS. However, one new title for the platform coming out this Fall is poised to smash that stereotype; Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is possibly the best looking game to grace the DS to-date, and better yet, it's like Bethesda's Oblivion, but in your pocket.

IL2: Sturmovik Birds of Prey: Dogfighting Has Never Been So Much Fun
