Countdown To Halo Reach: The Story

Mon, Aug 30th, 2010, 10:02 pm (EST) BY COLIN

When I look back at my time spent with Halo 3, I immediately remember all of the competitive multiplayer matches with friends. Looking ahead to Halo Reach, I find myself excited for the campaign co-op experience. Why is that? There's just something about Halo's campaign mode that's addictively fun, despite its limitations. Sure there are only so many times you can run through the story mode, but while multiplayer may be what fans latch onto for months on end, the campaign has been (and will be) a massive driving force for Halo Reach's sales. Join me, as I unofficially declare this upcoming week to be 'Halo Reach Week', and take you on a journey that most PS3 fans will ignore.

Perhaps this is a unique perspective, but I've never felt there to be any tension in the world of Halo unless the player was pitted against the Flood. The covenant was never a big enough threat really, you spend the greater part of three games stomping across every single thing the alien collective has on a regular basis. Playing the game as Master Chief does have that effect however, which is why I look forward to experiencing the fun as Noble Team. From the very start, they're simply more human (and therefore more realistic) than the Chief ever was.  We see them without helmets, as they prepare for battle, and we understand they each have their own personalities and preferences. They are first and foremost human beings, and depicting the Spartans as such has never really been More »

Halo: Reach Hands-On

Fri, Aug 27th, 2010, 11:42 am (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

Bungie's farewell to Halo is shaping up to be a glorious swansong. Promising to reclaim the magic of Halo: Combat Evolved, while echoing the grounded narrative of ODST and building on the stellar online modes the franchise has become known for, you get the feeling that this could be the very pinnacle of the Halo series.

The developers certainly think so. They've stuffed every spare byte of the disc with content. A full campaign, a plethora of adversarial and co-op modes, a substantially enhanced Firefight mode, as well as the frighteningly flexible Forge 2.0 see to that. It's bursting at the seams. More »

Top Ten Development Studios Right Now

Thu, Aug 19th, 2010, 10:43 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Games have always been behind other creative mediums - such as film, music, and literature - when it comes to making consumption choices based on the team behind a product, as opposed to its franchise tag or brand. That being said, the "hardcore", enthusiast crowd has always had a deep appreciation and sense of loyalty toward the select group of studios that continually produce quality. Thankfully, that trend is slowly beginning to penetrate mainstream gaming.

With that in mind, we decided to compile a list of the top development studios at the present moment - studios that generate a great deal of anticipation behind their endeavors, and are an influential force in the industry. This list is specifically directed towards individual teams, not publishers (i.e. Nintendo) or multiple teams that produce games under a common label (i.e. Ubisoft Montreal). More »

Halo Reach Gets A Taste Of 3D

Thu, Aug 19th, 2010, 2:55 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Bungie's Halo Reach seems to be getting a bit of the 3D treatment. Spotted at Gamescom, Halo Reach was on display in all its stereoscopic glory. Interestingly enough, Bungie never mentioned any word of 3D support for their final entry into the Halo Franchise.

This may just be a sample video on display. Neither Microsoft nor Bungie have officially come out to confirm that the Xbox 360 will be supporting the 3D movement which is being spearheaded by Sony's line of Bravia tellies and PS3s. More »

Halo Reach Gets Live Action Trailer

Remember the Halo 3 ad campaign? Well, Bungie's being the creative bunch that they are with Reach's very own marketing campaign. Things aren't going so well apparently as the fight isn't simply with the Covenant anymore, but with a group of separatists that seem to be causing plenty of troubles. More »

Halo: Reach's Marketing Campaign Should Be Epic

Thu, Aug 12th, 2010, 7:38 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Most huge game releases have gone hand-in-hand with some extremely expensive marketing pushes. Web advertisements, mass emails, promotional goodies flying everywhere, and of course commercials are all part of the mix. A lot of the time it's all in-game footage, with maybe a few cheeky nerd jokes tossed in there. But Bungie has always done something different, for which they'll always be remembered. Looking back at Halo 3's Believe campaign, it's not hard to wonder why the franchise has such a strong following. It was staggering, beautifully crafted, and leagues beyond the typical gaming advertisements that had come before it.

Knowing that, the follow up to Believe was 'We Are ODST', and knowing that Halo: Reach will be the final game in the series (at least for the time being), it can only be expected that this final game will have with it an amazing send off. Much like the Superbowl, I'm almost more excited for the ads than I am for the game itself, which says a lot about how effective these commercials are. Almost everyone I know, gamer or otherwise is familiar with them one way or another. It's this kind of detail that makes their commercials a joy to watch, though not in the Old Spice sense. More of an independent film that you wished would really happen. More »

Halo Reach Multiplayer Gets Revamped Halo 2 Maps

Thu, Aug 5th, 2010, 1:19 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Three new maps are inbound for Bungie's upcoming Halo: Reach, probably one of the more anticipated games of the remainder of 2010. The multiplayer's getting three new maps, two of which are "spiritual successors" to maps from Halo 2.

The two maps are Ivory Tower and Midship which will be renamed to Reflection and Zealot respectively. Aside from a graphical makeover, the only real difference to the remade Ivory Tower map is the physics and new gameplay mechanics, like the jetpack and sprinting. More »

Why Microsoft Are Losing The Exclusives Battle

Mon, Jul 12th, 2010, 6:57 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

At E3 2008, Square Enix’s Yoichi Wada shocked the gaming world. Taking to the stage at Microsoft's press conference, he announced that the latest in a series long associated with PlayStation would no longer be exclusive to Sony. Final Fantasy XIII was hitting Xbox 360.

It was a huge surprise, perhaps E3 2008's only true megaton, an increasingly rare phenomena for an event beset by pre-show leaks. Comments threads and forums around the world exploded with rage. More »

Bungie Explored 'Proper Halo 4', Decided Against It

Mon, Jun 28th, 2010, 9:43 am (EST) BY DARRYL

Halo 3 ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Master Chief's fate less than certain. However, it's for exactly this reason that Bungie decided to steer clear of doing a 'proper' Halo 4 and anything to do with Master Chief.

Speaking to the MTV Multiplayer Blog at E3, Brian Jarrard, who's the community director at Bungie stated "Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper Halo 4, where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story." E3 2010 Preview: Microsoft

Sun, Jun 13th, 2010, 8:18 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Microsoft has done an absolutely fantastic job letting consumers know that this year, Natal will launch in some form or another. In fact, most can already guess that this E3 will be filled with motion-sensor hype. Applications, useless video options, expensive peripherals, anyone who owns (or knows about) a Wii can already guess what's coming from Microsoft. But what about the games? We don't think that Microsoft will leave us hanging, at least not too badly.

It's hard not to wish for more Gears of War 3 info, and though Epic has done a fantastic job satisfying my need for character bios and background info I can only hope that Microsoft does their part by showing a bit of in-game. It would be great to see what the single player changes look like in motion, let alone see what the multiplayer could have in store for us. It would also mean that Microsoft would have something to show on the FPS front, since Halo: Reach has just concluded beta there aren't too many things they could possibly tell us that wouldn't ruin the single player completely. That doesn't mean that Halo: Reach will not make an appearance, but likely a limited one. More »
