Things Older Gamers Like To Moan AboutThu, Sep 2nd, 2010, 7:32 pm (EST) BY BEN GRIFFIN
The gaming world has changed: videogames come on small, shiny things called CD's. A small child thousands of miles away in Korea can whip your ass at Starcraft II. Resident Evil is now considered to have bad voice acting. HD graphics have rendered the outside world obsolete. Hardcore gamers love EA and hate Activision. Yes, sir, the world has changed, and you can either nobly roll with the punches and embrace the future or sit in your favourite comfy, moth-bitten chair and bitch, bitch, bitch. These are some of the topics in gaming today that make old people feel cold and frightened. |

Top Ten RPGs Of This Generation... So FarSat, Aug 28th, 2010, 12:46 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS
This console generation has seen a remarkable shift in what it means to be a role-playing game. Elements that have traditionally been exclusive to RPGs - such as leveling/upgrading characters and equipment, branching, non-linear plots, and collectible items - have begun to be incorporated in numerous other genres, blurring the lines between them. However, the core RPG genre remains intact, featuring a wide variety of the best Western and Eastern game designers have to offer. This is Gaming Union's top ten RPGs of this console generation (roughly 2005 to present), in alphabetical order. |

E3 2010: Fallout New Vegas Hands-On PreviewTue, Jun 29th, 2010, 12:18 pm (EST) BY ALEX
The eagerly anticipated 'sequel' to 2008's Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas was showcased at Bethesda’s booth at E3 2010. It isn't exactly a sequel per se, as the story has no correlation to Fallout 3's, taking place three years after the events in Fallout 3, and 39 years after those in Fallout 2. Fallout 3 changed a lot about the Fallout universe, and New Vegas will still reflect many of those changes, though Obsidian is bringing us back to the west coast. Can they strike gold in the Mojave desert? |

E3 2010: XCOM First LookWed, Jun 23rd, 2010, 1:32 pm (EST) BY ALEXWhile visiting 2K's booth at E3 2010, we had the good fortune to check out XCOM behind closed doors. It's definitely a change from the original games, as it's played entirely in first-person. It also takes place far before any of the past games, which were set at the turn of the Millennium, while XCOM occurs during the 1950s. With these changes, a new developer, and a new generation of technology, will XCOM stay true enough to the originals to maintain its fan base? More » |

Fallout: New Vegas To Use Steam PlatformWed, Jun 9th, 2010, 4:58 pm (EST) BY ALEXFallout: New Vegas will be fully integrated into Steam upon release. What exactly does this mean, though? On a post on Bethesda's official forum, Senior Producer Jason Bergman explains that, "Fallout: New Vegas uses Steamworks for achievements and other features (such as friends lists, cloud storage of user preferences and so on). Use of Steam will be mandatory at retail. So what does that mean? We’ve implemented Steamworks in as light and unobtrusive a way as possible. Yes, you will have to install Steam when you install Fallout: New Vegas if you don’t already have it." More » |

E3 is fast approaching! Those of us lucky enough to attend are starting to feel the weight of this beast of a games expo coming down on us, or maybe that's just me. Gaming Union's publisher preview series started off with a little Japanese company you may have heard of, Capcom. Next on the list is Bethesda Softworks, probably best known for the Elder Scrolls RPG series and more recently Fallout 3. Bethesda has revealed their lineup for the show floor, but what surprises will be in store behind closed doors, and at the major press conferences? |

Is Romance In Games Like Mass Effect Even Necessary?Mon, Jan 25th, 2010, 7:03 pm (EST) BY ADAM MAPlaying through a western RPG means that you'll be subjected to a lot of choices. Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, they all love to offer the player decisions that naturally have repercussions. From the group you assemble to the alliances you make, these decisions shape the very foundation of experience. Selecting a character that isn't good for the team may lead to some harder boss fights, and so on. But where does romance fit into all this? More » |
