Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta Starts Early September

Square Enix seems to be pretty fond of the social networking tool Twitter as that's just what they used to confirm that Final Fantasy XIV will be entering its open beta phase starting early September. Phase 3 of the closed beta is about to come conclusion some time tomorrow.

"The FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Test Phase 3 will end on August 25, then move to the Open Beta Test in early September. Get ready!"

The full game will retail on September 30. For those that preorder the collector's edition, they'll be able to access the game 8 days earlier on September 22. More »

Memory Issues Reason For Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Delay

The PlayStation 3 version of Square Enix's upcoming MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, was reportedly pushed back to March 2011 due to technical difficulties. Speaking with VG247, producer Hiromichi Tanaka explained that it mostly due to the lack of memory on Sony's platform.

Square Enix Announces Tactics Ogre Remake

Final Fantasy XIV Release Date Announced

Square Enix have announced that Final Fantasy XIV will be releasing as soon as September on the PC. The official date is currently set at the 30th of September, but a Collector's Edition of the game will be sold on the 22nd, which will allow players early access to the game.

Unfortunately, the news isn't as great for PS3 users, as they will have to wait until March 2011 to get their hands on the game. At least that's better than Xbox 360 users though, as Square Enix essentially dashed any hopes of the game appearing on that console. More »

E3 2010: Final Fantasy XIV Preview

Coming from a background of liking Final Fantasy and caring very little about MMOs, Final Fantasy XI served as a great window into a new world. While most Final Fantasy fans knew the game wasn't going to be of the typical ilk, there was still the urge to check it out and give it a chance. Those that did give it a chance typically fell in love with it, despite its very unforgiving nature. However, despite Square Enix's best attempts to keep players interested with numerous expansion packs, the game's attraction started to wane.

With this in mind, they came up with a solution - one that was extremely unexpected, but expected at the same time - Final Fantasy XIV. A game that on the surface looks almost identical to its predecessor. All of the races have been retained, albeit with different names, and the landscapes have the same graphical style. Square Enix believe that the familiarity will see players more inclined to drop their Final Fantasy XI accounts and move over to Final Fantasy XIV, while also hoping that all the new gameplay innovations will draw in other players from games like the behemoth that is World of Warcraft. E3 2010 Preview: Square Enix

Square Enix is a company with a history entrenched in the world of RPGs. Between franchises like Final Fantasy and Star Ocean, it's hard to associate them with anything else, but Square Enix has been keeping themselves busy publishing some pretty fun and (considering my preconceived notion of them) different games. So what will fans be able to expect from the infamous Square Enix? Quite a bit actually, and all of it looks pretty darn good.

In the RPG category Square Enix's two biggest games would have to be Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Though BBS is already released in Japan, it's doubtful Square Enix would pass up the opportunity to plug the franchise a bit more. More pressing however, is the new (offline) Final Fantasy, of which details have been very limited up to this point. A clip here and there, a few character backgrounds, and some flashy CG is all fans have had to chew on for quite a while now and knowing how much criticism hit their last Final Fantasy title I would expect Square Enix would want to show they've still got what it takes to make an incredible RPG. New Final Fantasy XIV Trailer Released

Square Enix, makers of the Final Fantasy series, have released a new trailer for their upcoming massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) Final Fantasy XIV. The spiritual successor to Final Fantasy XI was announced at last year's E3 for PlayStation 3 and PC.

The trailer, Life in Eorzea #1, shows the everyday chores and recreational activities - such as cooking meals, dancing, or going for a walk - that Square hopes will immerse players in the world. Those who hated brushing their teeth or taking a shower in Heavy Rain may want to steer clear. More »
