Gamescom 2010: Press Conference Previews

Tue, Aug 10th, 2010, 8:23 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Gamescom, Europe's stop on the major game convention circuit, is just around the corner, kicking off with three press conferences from Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Sony next Tuesday. The German hosted event has risen to prominence over the past couple years, now viewed by publishers as an additional avenue (alongside E3 and TGS) for major global announcements - Sony and Microsoft revealed the PS3 Slim and Fable III at Gamescom 2009, respectively. With that in mind, anticipation for next week's convention is high, so we've broken down what to expect from the big three conferences.

Gears overseer Cliff Bleszinski has explained the reasons behind the hold up on the Gears of War Movie. They've gone back to the drawing board regarding the screenplay as it was initially too costly, rated R and "contained no love story." A love story in Gears of War? More »

Microsoft Scrapped Plans For PC and Xbox 360 Cross-Platform Play

Thu, Jul 22nd, 2010, 12:56 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Microsoft has apparently killed off any plans to integrate cross-platform play between PC and Xbox 360 players. Microsoft conducted a project "under wraps" quite a while ago where PC and 360 players were pitted against one another in games like Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. The result, "console players got destroyed every time," according to Rahul Sood founder of Voodoo PC and CTO of gaming at Hewlet-Packard. More »

Gamers Decide The Fate Of Carmine

Wed, Jul 21st, 2010, 11:16 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

It's not often that gamers get to decide which character they get to see live or die in a game, and even rarer when that decision is made mid-development. Epic Games is letting players decide the fate of the latest Carmine brother through the purchasing of Xbox 360 Avatar t-shirts. More »

Why Microsoft Are Losing The Exclusives Battle

Mon, Jul 12th, 2010, 6:57 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

At E3 2008, Square Enix’s Yoichi Wada shocked the gaming world. Taking to the stage at Microsoft's press conference, he announced that the latest in a series long associated with PlayStation would no longer be exclusive to Sony. Final Fantasy XIII was hitting Xbox 360.

It was a huge surprise, perhaps E3 2008's only true megaton, an increasingly rare phenomena for an event beset by pre-show leaks. Comments threads and forums around the world exploded with rage. More »

E3 2010: Vanquish Hands-On Preview

Tue, Jun 29th, 2010, 9:01 pm (EST) BY COLIN

If you thought that the shooter genre was over saturated with just too many of them, and that Vanquish is just another rehash, think again. Vanquish may look like yet another third person shooter, but Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil, and Platinum Games is definitely packing all the crazy, over the top action sequences known to games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta into this sci-fi action game. E3 2010: Bulletstorm Hands-On Impressions

Tue, Jun 22nd, 2010, 6:31 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Bulletstorm, from developers People Can Fly and Epic Games, is an upcoming first-person shooter that rewards players for killing in a creative, sadistic way. Being built on the Unreal Engine, in close collaboration with Epic, has given Bulletstorm a very familiar presentation - it looks strikingly similar to Gears of War, albeit at a much quicker pace. While the core "skillshot" mechanics are entertaining, the limited move-set in the demo makes the game's staying power uncertain. More »

Microsoft E3 2010 Conference Consensus: Disappointing

Mon, Jun 14th, 2010, 10:11 pm (EST) BY KYLE WYNEN

Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference has come and passed, and with it plenty of details with it on a relatively small amount of Xbox 360 exclusive games, and quite a few Xbox 360 Kinect games. Gaming Union had its collective eyes glued to the conference, and of course, we have our collective opinions, condensed, here for you to check out before our next podcast.

Jamie: Overall Microsoft has had next to nothing interesting to show off, with way too much emphasis on boring looking Kinect games and fitness junk. Just to add insult to injury, they took one of my favourite Xbox 360 games, Forza 3, and made a junky looking arcade passing-mode with a poorly implemented "look at this car" mode. More »

The Scoop On Microsoft's 11 E3 Exclusive Titles

Mon, Jun 14th, 2010, 3:47 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

So, Microsoft's E3 press conference just finished up and they gave us the details on eleven exclusive titles that will be coming out on the Xbox 360. Only four of them are core games though, as seven of the titles will be coming out to work with the newly renamed Microsoft Kinect.

Out of the four core games, only one of them was actually a new title and Crackdown 2 was completely omitted from the press conference entirely - an interesting move for Microsoft, will it pay off? Who knows. More »

E3 2010 Preview: Microsoft

Sun, Jun 13th, 2010, 8:18 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Microsoft has done an absolutely fantastic job letting consumers know that this year, Natal will launch in some form or another. In fact, most can already guess that this E3 will be filled with motion-sensor hype. Applications, useless video options, expensive peripherals, anyone who owns (or knows about) a Wii can already guess what's coming from Microsoft. But what about the games? We don't think that Microsoft will leave us hanging, at least not too badly.

It's hard not to wish for more Gears of War 3 info, and though Epic has done a fantastic job satisfying my need for character bios and background info I can only hope that Microsoft does their part by showing a bit of in-game. It would be great to see what the single player changes look like in motion, let alone see what the multiplayer could have in store for us. It would also mean that Microsoft would have something to show on the FPS front, since Halo: Reach has just concluded beta there aren't too many things they could possibly tell us that wouldn't ruin the single player completely. That doesn't mean that Halo: Reach will not make an appearance, but likely a limited one. More »

E3 2010 Preview: Tecmo Koei

Mon, Jun 7th, 2010, 8:06 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Tecmo and Koei are both storied Japanese game publishers responsible for iconic franchises such as Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, and Dynasty Warriors. In 2009, the two companies announced plans to merge, which isn't as interesting as it may sound because nothing really changed. As for E3 2010, well, the publisher hasn't publicly released much information on its lineup at this point, allowing us to let our minds run wild with speculation. A new Ninja Gaiden? Dynasty Warriors? Quantum Theory on the show floor? It's all on the table.

While Tecmo Koei's lineup is largely a mystery, one thing is a fairly set bet, Quantum Theory will be making an appearance. The Gears of War-esque game is being targeted at a Western audience and is currently slated for a Summer 2010 release window. So, what better way to promote it then with a big showing at E3, the biggest gaming conference in the West. Expect Tecmo to announce a firm release date for the game, alongside a playable demo. Quantum Theory Preview

Wed, May 26th, 2010, 2:18 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Have you ever thought to yourself, ‘Gears of War is a great game, but what it really needs is a Japanese inspired story and art direction’? If the answer is yes, then Quantum Theory is the game you’ve been waiting for. Developed by Team Tachyon and published by Tecmo, Quantum Theory doesn’t try very hard to hide numerous similarities to Epic’s Gears of War, expect that it’s a PS3 exclusive. However, the game does purpose a few unique ideas to differentiate itself - the most important being the interaction between the two main characters, and the ever changing environments. More »
