Modern Warfare 2 DLC Generates Serious Revenue

Sat, Aug 7th, 2010, 10:20 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

According to Activision's Q2 2010 earnings call, the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package on PS3 and the Resurgence map pack on Xbox 360 were sold more than five million times combined between April and June.

These figures mean that the map packs rank in the top five retail titles for the US and Europe in 2010. "For the first half of the year, Call of Duty map packs have generated enough revenue to rank among the top five retail releases in the US and Europe thus far in 2010," stated Thomas Tippl, the COO of Activision. Pachter: Online Won't Stay Free For Long

Mon, Jul 26th, 2010, 1:43 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has said time and again that publishers will most certainly move to some form of online subscription model, making players pay to game online. He's previously mentioned that Activision would do so for their Call of Duty franchise, however that was debunked by both Treyarch and Infinity Ward. But what about an optional premium service? Pachter agrees that that's possibly the next potential step forward for the company. More »

Call of Duty: Black Ops Xbox Pre-E3 Conference Preview

Mon, Jun 14th, 2010, 2:27 pm (EST) BY KYLE WYNEN

Call of Duty: Black Ops has seemingly become Treyarch's chance to finally prove themselves to the game's industry, as the last two Call of Duty games they've produced have greatly lived in the shadow of those developed by Infinity Ward. With Infinity Ward quite possibly in shambles, at Microsoft's pre-E3 conference Activision took the chance to debut the first game of the conference, surprise, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Kicking right into a trailer many of us have already seen before the conference was even properly introduced, Treyarch took the stage to demo the game for the first time. The demo wasn't overly long, starting with the player making their way into a tunnel in the jungles of Vietnam. Incase you forgot, or maybe didn't know, Call of Duty: Black Ops starts off in the 1970's war in Vietnam, and as such the tunnel packed a few surprises with North Vietnamese forces jumping out and stabbing American soldiers before the player could pick the assailants off. E3 2010 Preview: Activision

Fri, Jun 11th, 2010, 12:35 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Activision is a company that's been having a bit of a rough spot this past year, at least in the publicity department. A slew of Guitar Hero games, the Infinity Ward drama, and the occasional closing of a development studio never gives a good impression, but it appears this year the publisher has a pretty impressive lineup of things to show the world. E3 is a chance to turn things around, at least somewhat, and it looks like as though Activision have secured some pretty fantastic games. Fact, speculation, and alternate realities come together for this E3 Preview: Activision Edition.

First and foremost comes Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions in which Activision hopes that a Spider-Man game without massive cities to swing around will sell well. All joking aside, gamers have already been given a taste of the two dimensions that will be featured (both based off of real comic book worlds) and E3 is the perfect time to unveil the last two. Or just one, who knows. On the other end of the comic book spectrum is their latest addition to the Transformers world, who's release date is just around the corner. Still it wouldn't be surprising if they announced some last minute additions to the game, gave reviews another shot at the demo and generally pushed some hype. Maybe that's just me wishing they would add Blackout to the Decepticon lineup. More »

Respawn Entertainment Will Have No Announcements At E3

Wed, Jun 9th, 2010, 2:04 pm (EST) BY JAMIE COURTS

Contrary to the former reveal that had apparently come straight from Respawn heads Vince Zampella and Jason West, EA has come out to confirm that the Facebook account that posted the E3 surprise news was, in fact, a fake account belonging to neither of the former Infinity Ward members.

The previous statement that was posted on Facebook earlier this week stated, "big time announcement at E3 next week. Stay tuned, kiddies!" The news seemed very odd at the time since it was said by EA Partners head, David DeMartini, that Respawn has only just received furniture for their office, and that they are nowhere near having anything ready for E3. Will Medal of Honor Be Able To Topple Call of Duty?

Fri, May 21st, 2010, 7:19 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

As the great Solid Snake once said, 'War has Changed.' Modern war at least, since the original release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the face of console FPS gaming has shifted dramatically from it's infamous World War roots to a more high-tech playground. This isn't to say that 'modern day' shooters never really happened prior, or that Infinity Ward is single-handedly responsible for informing the teenagers everywhere about how an AC-130 works. But the genre has most definitely become more streamlined, and the action has taken a very different shape in the wake of CoD 4's success. The two most recent players? Treyarch and EA, both working hard to make sure that their respective series will wind up at the top of the sales charts. The real question is, which one deserves more attention, Medal of Honor or Call of Duty: Black Ops? More »

Singularity Preview

Mon, May 17th, 2010, 9:50 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Singularity, being developed by Raven Software, is an upcoming first-person shooter that focuses on one core mechanic to separate itself from the crowd, manipulating time. At first glance, the concept sounds strikingly similar to 2007’s TimeShift, a comparison the developers want to avoid. Singularity is looking to make a name for itself by providing players with a variety of ways to interact with the time mechanics, ideally creating clever puzzles and versatile combat as a result.
