GamesCom: Seth Killian Interview

Thu, Sep 2nd, 2010, 6:10 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

Aside from being the Capcom Community Manager, an all-round Street Fighter master and the guy who SFIV's boss was named after, Seth Killian is also one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. It was a pleasure then, to sit down in the relative calm of a hotel room just around the corner from the carnage that was GamesCom and chew the fat about everything from the pains of balancing, to generating "a giant storm of crap." Multiplayer Confirmed For Batman: Arkham City

Wed, Sep 1st, 2010, 10:19 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Batman: Arkham Asylum was a hit when it first released. It was the first proper licensed super hero video game that was actually fun. A sequel, Batman: Arkham City was confirmed to be in the works just recently and apparently, it will feature multiplayer. A component that was not seen in the original.

According to a post on ArkhamCity.co.uk, the confirmation comes via this month's issue of UK magazine PSM3 where Rocksteady have claimed that "multiplayer is a certainty, but no details on this yet." More »

Fable III Hands-On Preview

Tue, Aug 31st, 2010, 5:36 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

It is a time-honoured tradition that sequels are "bigger, better, and more bad-ass." Building on the success of their predecessors, they typically add more story, more weapons, more enemies and more features. When it comes to sequels, conventional wisdom is unequivocal, more is better.

But that's not entirely true of Fable3. More »

Fans Unhappy With StarCraft II 1.1 Patch

Fri, Aug 27th, 2010, 7:26 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Recently addressing a lot of problems occurring in StarCraft II, Blizzard announced a few big balancing changes to the multiplayer. While the original goal was balance, many fans have taken a good look at the proposed changes for the first major patch and are finding themselves a little disappointed. It's been no secret that many professional players have left Zerg in favour of Terran due to certain balancing issues already and now it appears that the Protoss are up next on the chopping block, seemingly, for no reason at all. Halo: Reach Hands-On

Fri, Aug 27th, 2010, 11:42 am (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

Bungie's farewell to Halo is shaping up to be a glorious swansong. Promising to reclaim the magic of Halo: Combat Evolved, while echoing the grounded narrative of ODST and building on the stellar online modes the franchise has become known for, you get the feeling that this could be the very pinnacle of the Halo series.

The developers certainly think so. They've stuffed every spare byte of the disc with content. A full campaign, a plethora of adversarial and co-op modes, a substantially enhanced Firefight mode, as well as the frighteningly flexible Forge 2.0 see to that. It's bursting at the seams. More »

GamesCom: The 3rd Birthday Hands-On

Fri, Aug 27th, 2010, 8:43 am (EST) BY DARRYL

The observant amongst us will notice that The 3rd Birthday, despite being part of the Parasite Eve franchise, doesn't mention Parasite Eve anywhere in the title. That's because Square Enix only want it loosely associated with the games that came in the past - they see The 3rd Birthday as a complete reboot for the franchise, a new chapter if you will. It's certainly not a spin-off though, so don't go thinking about it like that.

What does this mean on face value? That the game is going away from its more traditional RPG roots and more towards that of a third-person shooter. That's not to say there won't be some RPG elements, there will, but in the grand scheme of the game they will be quite minimal. More »

GamesCom: Red Faction: Armageddon Impressions

Thu, Aug 26th, 2010, 8:10 am (EST) BY DARRYL

When I sat down to check out Red Faction: Armageddon for the second time, I initially felt a sense of deja vu. On face value, the demo look extremely similar to the one I saw at E3; Darius Mason was again attempting to create a safe passage for a convoy of humans by getting rid of alien infested structures. However, this time he had a few extra tools to help him out and I was quite surprised at how much it changed the feel of the action. More »

THQ: Red Faction Armageddon Doubles Guerilla's Destruction

Wed, Aug 25th, 2010, 6:08 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

Much has been made about Red Faction: Armageddon's environment choice. Guerilla was open-world on the surface of Mars, while Armageddon is under the surface.

We had a chance to speak to Chad Greene at GamesCom, about how destruction has been affected and we were surprised by his answers. When comparing Guerilla to Armageddon he said: More »

What Expectations Should Rise From Dust?

Mon, Aug 23rd, 2010, 5:26 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

It's always difficult to look at a game that really challenges modern design concepts and what qualifies as being fun. From Dust is a game that was recently shown at GamesCom 2010, and it already has me wondering how well it will sell. The concept looks fantastic, the graphics look great, and the replay value seems endless to me. But then again, that what most 'God Games' look like. In theory they sound, and sometimes even look great, but in practice things tend to fall apart. Does From Dust have the potential to be its own natural disaster?

The most recent failure in creationist-gaming (in my opinion) is Spore. The game promised the idea of taking a creature from one end of evolution to another, while at the same time displaying its insignificance. In the end, the most interesting phases of the game were far too short and a large majority of the game is played in a very modern/futuristic setting. More »

Italian City Angry With Gran Turismo 5

City officials of Siena, a city in Italy, are pretty upset over the recreation of their Piazza del Campo in Sony and Polyphony's Gran Turismo 5. The locale has quite the history and is also the known for its infamous bareback horse racing events. Polyphony has recreated every knock and cranny, from the surrounding architecture to the flags of each participating city. More »

RAGE Release Date Announcement Signals Shift In Game Production

Fri, Aug 20th, 2010, 6:11 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

id Software, the iconic team behind the Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake franchises, is currently working on their first new IP in over a decade, RAGE. The upcoming cross-genre title, largely considered a first-person shooter with driving and open world elements, was recently given a firm release date of September 13th, 2011 in North America. The announcement comes over a year prior to the planned launch, a rarity in an industry that tends to reveal launch details at the last possible second in production. id's release announcement shows a degree of consideration and planning that the larger gaming industry should work to adopt.

Being able to set a firm release date well in advance indicates that id is confident in their ability to reach that target, likely meaning RAGE's development is somewhat near completion or at least far enough along to see the end in sight. It's also safe to assume that some time has been allocated for unexpected hurdles, creating a buffer zone after production is complete to avoid delays. This approach affords publishers and developers much greater stability when creating costly triple A titles, avoiding damaging delays. More »

Top Ten Development Studios Right Now

Thu, Aug 19th, 2010, 10:43 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Games have always been behind other creative mediums - such as film, music, and literature - when it comes to making consumption choices based on the team behind a product, as opposed to its franchise tag or brand. That being said, the "hardcore", enthusiast crowd has always had a deep appreciation and sense of loyalty toward the select group of studios that continually produce quality. Thankfully, that trend is slowly beginning to penetrate mainstream gaming.

With that in mind, we decided to compile a list of the top development studios at the present moment - studios that generate a great deal of anticipation behind their endeavors, and are an influential force in the industry. This list is specifically directed towards individual teams, not publishers (i.e. Nintendo) or multiple teams that produce games under a common label (i.e. Ubisoft Montreal). More »
