Mafia II Preview

Thu, Aug 5th, 2010, 3:38 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

There are many great and terrible stages of development in humanity's long history, and as a civilization we are obsessed with a few of them. The twilight years of the cowboy, the shogun era of the Japanese feudal society, World War II and the struggle against Nazi Germany. We focus on these events and all aspects surrounding them, often mystified at a way of life filled with its own sort of terror and nobility. Movies, books, games, and television try their best to capture these moments for us, to bring them to life and let us marvel at an era most have forgotten. Enter Mafia II: a game probably destined to be remembered as a phenomenally accurate depiction of the 1950's American underworld.

A preview for a game like this requires a lot of care and attention, since much of Mafia II's aspirations lay in successfully recreating an entire era of history. There's a bit less focus on gameplay, and more on the storyline and overall world design. Much like Red Dead Redemption was pressed hard for how well it recreated the Wild West in design and theme, Mafia II will be completely judged by its ability to juggle storytelling and world interaction. Cars, weapons, suits, décor, and even diction have all been copied to as close to the truth as possible. Graphical details have been refined to create some extremely realistic looking character models, and the soundtrack has been set to match the 'mood of the era'. E3 2010 Preview: Take-Two

Wed, Jun 9th, 2010, 1:52 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Gaming Union's E3 publisher preview series continues to countdown all the way to the big event next week. Next up on the list is Take-Two Interactive, best known for their large subsidiaries, Rockstar and 2K. These combined companies command some of the most well recognized franchises in gaming such as Grand Theft Auto, Midnight Club, Bioshock, and 2K Sports. As usual, Rockstar is riding a wave of success, most recently with Red Dead Redemption and therefore doesn't need to directly attend E3. However, this doesn't mean that we won't see Rockstar games at E3. Will Grand Theft Auto V be announced at Microsoft's press conference? What about the PS3-exclusive Agent? L.A. Noire? Bully 2? Irrational Games next project? Take-Two's got a lot of potential this year.

While we won't be seeing anything presented by Rockstar at the show, we do know a fair amount about what 2K has in the works. The likes of Sid Meier's Civilization V, Mafia II, as well as series reboots Spec Ops, and XCOM will all be there. Civilization V apparently will continue to build on the established formula the series is revered for. It will feature randomly generated, hexagonal maps, computer controlled city states, an overhauled combat system and much more. Mafia II will attempt to recapture the 20th century Italian organized crime magic of its predecessor. Scheduled for release in August of this year, Mafia's New York-San Francisco hybrid sandbox should be nearly complete. More »

Developer diaries seem to be all the rage these days, and for good reason, they're usually well made, informative, and all the juicy details are coming straight from developer's lips rather than a press release sheet. 2K Czech have stepped up with their first of many developer diaries centred around their forth coming August release, Mafia II, for the PS3 and Xbox 360. 2K Games: Mafia II More Like Bioshock Than GTA

Posted on 2009/06/09 BY KYLE WYNEN

In development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, with an early 2010 release in the cards, 2K Games' Mafia II had a great showing at E3 2009. Spanning 10 years of main character Vito's life, the game starts out half way through the post-war 40's and ends off a decade later with the rocking 50's.

Mafia II has a lot to live up to considering the success of its predecessor. However, kicking off the live demonstration it was evident this will only work in Mafia II's favour. As producer Denby Grace put it, "the thing that really resonated with critics and gamers alike was this strong cinematic experience, this compelling narrative, as well as the authentic period setting of the 20's and 30's. Mafia II is only going to take these strengths and build on them further." Seeing Grace demo the game before our eyes only assured us that he wasn't overselling the game at all. More »
