0  RAGE Release Date Announcement Signals Shift In Game Production Fri, Aug 20th, 2010, 6:11 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS id Software, the iconic team behind the Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake franchises, is currently working on their first new IP in over a decade, RAGE. The upcoming cross-genre title, largely considered a first-person shooter with driving and open world elements, was recently given a firm release date of September 13th, 2011 in North America. The announcement comes over a year prior to the planned launch, a rarity in an industry that tends to reveal launch details at the last possible second in production. id's release announcement shows a degree of consideration and planning that the larger gaming industry should work to adopt. Being able to set a firm release date well in advance indicates that id is confident in their ability to reach that target, likely meaning RAGE's development is somewhat near completion or at least far enough along to see the end in sight. It's also safe to assume that some time has been allocated for unexpected hurdles, creating a buffer zone after production is complete to avoid delays. This approach affords publishers and developers much greater stability when creating costly triple A titles, avoiding damaging delays. More »

1  Call of Duty: Black Ops Hardened And Prestige Editions Up For Preorder Thu, Aug 12th, 2010, 2:47 pm (EST) BY COLIN The Hardened and Prestige Editions for Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops game is out and about, ready for those diehard military gear fanatics to start hitting those preorder buttons. Much like Modern Warfare 2's collectors bundles, Black Ops' own bundles come packed with a bunch of goodies, except instead of night vision devices this time around, Activision's packing in the surveillance R/C car of explosive doom as seen in the multiplayer trailer released a couple of days ago - minus the explosive doom, of course. The Hardened edition packs the Black Ops Limited Edition Medal, complete with a display case plus four exclusive playable co-op maps, exclusive Black Ops Home avatar gear and a steelbook case for the game. Interestingly, StarCraft II saw a huge decline in sales (75 percent), which saw it drop down to fourth in the sales rankings, just ahead of Red Dead Redemption. More »

0  Modern Warfare 2 DLC Generates Serious Revenue Sat, Aug 7th, 2010, 10:20 pm (EST) BY DARRYL According to Activision's Q2 2010 earnings call, the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package on PS3 and the Resurgence map pack on Xbox 360 were sold more than five million times combined between April and June. These figures mean that the map packs rank in the top five retail titles for the US and Europe in 2010. "For the first half of the year, Call of Duty map packs have generated enough revenue to rank among the top five retail releases in the US and Europe thus far in 2010," stated Thomas Tippl, the COO of Activision. 0  Medal of Honor Not Just A Poor Man's Modern Warfare/Bad Company Fri, Jul 30th, 2010, 5:17 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS The reboot of the Medal of Honor series has been touted by EA as the cornerstone of its efforts to dethrone Modern Warfare 2 on top of the shooter genre. EA feels strongly enough about this goal that they've assigned two development teams to tackle the project, the newly formed Danger Close studio on singleplayer and acclaimed Battlefield developer DICE on multiplayer. After spending some time with DICE's online offering, the project's inspirations are immediately clear. Medal of Honor's multiplayer looks exactly like what you'd expect from a cross between Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. It takes the close quarters feel, perks and leveling system from Modern Warfare, and blends itself with some of Bad Company's vehicular combat and destructibility. To some extent, Medal of Honor suffers from its position in the middle - not quite as smooth controls as Modern Warfare and nowhere near the level of destructibility from Battlefield. However, DICE have still managed to create an enjoyable experience, one that (even at this early stage in development) has its own appeal. More »

Back in 1997, Nintendo 64 owners were crowded round their TVs either shooting each other with golden guns or happily slapping Oddjob around for being too short. Goldeneye was the definitive multiplayer experience for console owners with literally nothing to compete with it. But now, more than a decade later, Nintendo have decided to update the game with a new story, new setting and a new Bond with the help of developer, Eurocom. However, there is a small problem, this isn't 1997, this isn't the original Goldeneye and there is now plenty of competition to contend with. More »

Better get ready for another hit to the wallet as the Resurgence Pack comes to the PlayStation 3 and PC tomorrow for another $15. Much like the last map pack, the appropriately named Resurgence pack will have 5 maps, of course rehashing two from the first Modern Warfare, as well as three new maps to play in multiplayer with.
