Why Japanese Developers Need New IPs Part 2Thu, Sep 2nd, 2010, 9:54 pm (EST) BY ADAM MALast time we covered what exactly is wrong in the mainstream Japanese gaming industry. The oversaturation of RPGs, longstanding titles that change very little, and of course the terrible attempts at reaching Western consumers certainly don't help much. There's really no reason for these developers (or publishers) to be so afraid of moving their products overseas, in fact there are a lot of great reasons to do so. The market is not only ready for Japan to take the lead again, they're almost begging for it. How do I figure? Allow me to explain. More » |

Nier ReviewTue, Apr 27th, 2010, 12:14 pm (EST) BY DARRYLEver since its reveal around this time last year, Nier has been a game that's flown under the radar. Quite surprising considering the game is produced and published by Square Enix, but Cavia, the developer, do have a very mixed track record. However, its release has now arrived in the West and Nier is at last able to spread its wings and show the world that it's a title that should demand a share of the spotlight - even if the game doesn't shine the brightest in every aspect. NieR Battle And Cutscene Screens UnleashedThu, Apr 8th, 2010, 11:09 am (EST) BY KYLE WYNENNieR is on the retail doorstep, hitting shelves at the end of April, yet it has remained somewhat low profile on the finer details. Considering how vague details of Final Fantasy XIII were for years, including immediately before release, it's little surprise Square Enix has continued the trend with NieR, but today at least we have new screen shots to flaunt from the game. NieR PreviewMon, Apr 5th, 2010, 5:31 pm (EST) BY MARY LYNN MCLACHLANMeet Nier, a robust middle aged man with a rugged, violent look to him. Nier enjoys long walks alongside plagued beaches, defeating evil, and saving his daughter. Naturally a man of this calibre is a shoe in for a self-titled video game, 'Nier.' Cavia began developing the game right away, and Square Enix believed the story of Nier upheld their very own standard of excellence. Truth be told this action role-play game won't be based off a real 'unyielding' man presented in a mock-reality video game fashion. This is unfortunate as the story would have been more unique, or at least been more fun that way. More » |

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World ReviewWed, Dec 23rd, 2009, 1:21 pm (EST) BY DARRYLTales of Symphonia was a huge hit for Namco when it appeared on the Gamecube and PlayStation 2 back in 2004 and many believe it to be the strongest title in the Tales of franchise. Because of its success, Namco decided it would be wise to try and expand on this offering, and thus, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World was hatched as a sequel/spin-off title, which would take place two years after the original and would feature a similar band of characters. TGS 2009: Nier Gestalt Hands-OnPosted on 2009/10/09 BY KYLE WYNENIt's great what just a few months of development can do for a game. At E3 2009, Nier, a third-person action game, was shown by Square Enix to the press for the first time. They didn't let anyone play it as it was severely underdeveloped, with poor graphics, and gameplay that looked thrown together. Nier all around underwhelmed in that state. Enter Tokyo Game Show 2009 however, and Nier looked completely uplifted. More » |

Nier Gestalt, Nier Replicant: What Are The Differences?Posted on 2009/10/01 BY DARRYLPrior to this year's Tokyo Game Show, gamers were under the impression that Nier was a game in the singular form. However, upon arriving at the show, they were greeted with two different versions, one called Nier Gestalt on the Xbox 360, and the other called Nier Replicant on the PlayStation 3. More » |

Nier's Kingdom Hearts Similarities A 'Coincidence'Posted on 2009/06/16 BY DARRYLNier is something of a new venture for Square Enix. Traditionally known for their role-playing games, they've had a few forays into other genres in the past, to mixed success. However, one of the successes was Kingdom Hearts, something of an action adventure / role-playing hybrid. More » |
