Hot Shots Tennis: Get A Grip Review

Fri, Jul 9th, 2010, 12:23 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

The Hot Shots Golf series has been around since the dawn of the PlayStation era in 1997. It has always sported a cartoon-like appearance, wacky characters and to top it off, a great physics engine. It made for some great golfing action. In 2007, the Hot Shots series took its first foray into the world of tennis on the PlayStation 2, and this summer, they've brought tennis to the handheld PSP system. It's a pretty drastic change from golf though, so how does Clap Hanz's development style translate to tennis on the PSP? More »

Sega Classics Needing A Revival: Part One

Fri, Apr 9th, 2010, 8:18 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

The late 80s and the early of the 90s were all about two console manufacturers, Nintendo and Sega. Of course, there were others around at the time, but none really gathered any real momentum with regards to their hardware and even Sega were mostly playing catch-up behind the dominant Nintendo. This of course lead to some legendary advertising campaigns, but it also lead to some great games being created by both companies as they competed for the attentions and imaginations of the general public.

I was one of the kids who got sucked in by Sega, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing all the exclusive titles they pumped out because the vast majority of them were actually pretty damn good. Quite a lot of those great games have drifted into the realms of video game lore though, or others have had a reboot that simply failed dismally and it's really disappointing looking in from the outside. So, here's the first part of my list of Sega classics, or games strongly associated with Sega, that I think really need a reboot, and a good one at that. More »

Nintendo DSi XL "What would you like 93% bigger?"

Sun, Mar 28th, 2010, 10:29 am (EST) BY MARY LYNN MCLACHLAN

In March 2009 Nintendo announced an impressive benchmark, that they'd shipped their 100 millionth DS. Since then, they've shipped approximately 25 million more and this has seen the DS become the best selling handheld gaming system to date and quite soon, it might surpass the PlayStation 2, making it the best selling gaming system ever. With sales so high, it's only natural that Nintendo would eventually come up with a new addition to the DS family, so it was no surprise when the DSi XL was announced October 2009. The new unit boasts a 4.2'' screen, which is 93% bigger than that of a DS Lite, but there is more scepticism than anticipation regarding how successful the new unit will be. Will the new larger DSi XL be the granddaddy DS, or will it simply be played by granddaddies, grand children, or the otherwise visually impaired?

Fully equipped, the DSi XL leaves none of its predecessors (DSi) features behind, but as expected, there are improvements. A standard stylus may be used, and is provided, but in addition to there is a new large pen sized stylus that offers added comfort. Better and wider viewing angles are also a feature of the new larger LCD screen, making it a sure fire choice for players wishing to share their gaming experiences with an audience. It seems that there may be more than meets the eye with the DSi XL, but besides the extra screen space, improved viewing angle, preloaded games, and the pen sized stylus, it is essentially a DSi with 20% more weight. EA: Console Price Cuts 'Have A Long Way To Go'

Wed, Feb 24th, 2010, 5:17 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

EA's Chief Financial Officer, Eric Brown, has stated his belief that console pricing has "a long way to go" before the end of this console generation. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, he said, "we do have a long way to go with respect to pricing. Last cycle, approximately 48 percent of PlayStation 2 units were sold at a price point of $149 or less. Clearly at $299 we're nowhere near that price point." More »

It seems like ages ago that Kingdom Hearts 2 was released on the PlayStation 2, and since then Square Enix have produced numerous spin-offs like Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. However, they've been completely quiet on the game that fans have been craving - Kingdom Hearts 3.

It's understandable really, as they have quite a few other big titles on the go at the moment, but things have started to change a bit recently. Decembers figures from the NPD Group have been released, which look at sales throughout the region of North America. The Nintendo Wii is still dominating the field, with the Nintendo DS coming in second; together they managed to sell over 7 million units throughout the month.

The PlayStation 3 had been occupying the next place for the last few months, but in November, the Xbox 360 retook its former position. Microsoft surely expected this to last, but it looks like the PS3 edged it by 50,000 units. It'll certainly be interesting to see how 2010 pans out after seeing these figures. More »

Tales of Symphonia was a huge hit for Namco when it appeared on the Gamecube and PlayStation 2 back in 2004 and many believe it to be the strongest title in the Tales of franchise. Because of its success, Namco decided it would be wise to try and expand on this offering, and thus, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World was hatched as a sequel/spin-off title, which would take place two years after the original and would feature a similar band of characters.
