APB Review

Thu, Jul 8th, 2010, 12:09 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

Few politicians decide that gang-violence is the only way to combat gang-violence, but in the city of San Paro somehow the bill passed. Enforcers work together to hunt down criminals and clean up the streets while the criminals of the world continue to do what they do best. Enter All Points Bulletin, where players can choose to be a thug or a very hip-hop oriented looking cop and start shooting just about anything that moves. That's the premise behind Realtime Worlds' first MMO, so how does it pan out? More »

E3 2010: Crackdown 2 Hands-On Preview

Thu, Jun 17th, 2010, 3:55 pm (EST) BY JAMIE COURTS

Crackdown 2 is the upcoming sequel to the 2007 Realtime Worlds title which featured over the top powers in a sandbox world where super-cops fought to take down massive gangs in the city. One of the big differences with Crackdown 2 is that the development torch has been handed down to Ruffian Games, which may cause a little worry to fans of the original when an original team has moved away from their title. APB Hands-On Preview

Tue, Jun 1st, 2010, 12:47 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

APB has been in development for quite a long time, it was actually supposed to come out in 2005 for the Xbox 360 and PC. However, when Realtime Worlds fully acquired the licence for the project, they decided that it wasn't really going in the direction they wanted and have spent the last five years getting the game to where they feel it should be. There have been some radical changes between now and then, but Dave Jones is confident that the finished product is going to fill a void in the MMO space.

While many MMOs feature a large lavish world where characters can interact, APB is much more focused around smaller hubs, whereby interaction can be increased. There are three main places for interaction, the social arena and two live arenas, where missions and combat can be undertaken. In the social arena, players can meet up with clan members, customise their car, outfit and look and interact with the marketplace. This is actually one of the big selling points of APB, as there's so much creative freedom. As long as real-world copyrights aren't infringed in a negative light, players can pretty much do whatever they want. The staff at Realtime Worlds have already been amazed at the level of creativity that's been displayed by the community in the closed beta and when the game launches, the sky really is the limit. Jones: APB On Xbox 360 Just Didn't Feel Right

Thu, May 27th, 2010, 1:27 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

APB is due out in a few months time, but it was originally supposed to come out in 2005 for the Xbox 360 and PC. Those amongst us who're incredibly astute will notice that it's now only coming out on the PC, although Realtime Worlds, the developer, have never flat out denied their intentions to bring the game to either the Xbox 360 or PS3 in the future.

Speaking at his studio, Dave Jones, the founder of Realtime Worlds stated that development of the Xbox 360 version stopped because "it just didn't feel right." He continued to state that "we [Realtime Worlds] wanted to make it absolutely right for PC first before thinking about anything else." More »

Is There Still Room For Crackdown 2?

Wed, May 12th, 2010, 9:27 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

The original Crackdown was one of the first tastes that gamers got this generation of what a modern open world game could do.  It followed only 2006’s Saints Row and Oblivion as major sandbox experiences, and was praised for innovations in online co-op.  The game gained considerable exposure in part from its early release this generation - February 2007 wasn’t the busiest time for game releases - and the Halo 3 beta code didn’t hurt. That being said, Crackdown by all accounts was a very solid game.  From the mind of David Jones, one of the creators of Grand Theft Auto, the design emphasized freedom to experiment, and above all fun.  A little over three years later, the environment in the gaming industry has changed significantly, Crackdown 2 now faces competition from all sides and doesn’t have the beta bonus.  Will it be as successful as its predecessor? After the Edinburgh Interactive Festival last week, speculation was rife that All Points Bulletin (APB) on the Xbox 360 may have been cancelled. However, when speaking at GamesCom, Realtime Worlds, the developers of APB, offered a slightly different response.
