Top Ten Development Studios Right Now

Thu, Aug 19th, 2010, 10:43 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Games have always been behind other creative mediums - such as film, music, and literature - when it comes to making consumption choices based on the team behind a product, as opposed to its franchise tag or brand. That being said, the "hardcore", enthusiast crowd has always had a deep appreciation and sense of loyalty toward the select group of studios that continually produce quality. Thankfully, that trend is slowly beginning to penetrate mainstream gaming.

With that in mind, we decided to compile a list of the top development studios at the present moment - studios that generate a great deal of anticipation behind their endeavors, and are an influential force in the industry. This list is specifically directed towards individual teams, not publishers (i.e. Nintendo) or multiple teams that produce games under a common label (i.e. Ubisoft Montreal). More »

The Best Games Of 2010... So Far

Fri, Jul 9th, 2010, 9:14 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

I'll cut straight to the chase on this one, 2010 has had some phenomenal games. Most years start out a little slow and then wind up into a big bang, but honestly it's hard to imagine anything better around the corner aside from a few releases here or there.

So before we get all wrapped up in Halo: Reach, or severely addicted to the latest MMO, let's take this time to reflect upon the phenomenal games that the first half of 2010 have brought to us. More »

Harmonix Brings Nickelback to Rock Band DLC

Fri, Jun 25th, 2010, 3:49 pm (EST) BY ALEX

For those who don’t play a lot of Rock Band, Harmonix releases a new DLC pack each week, usually a few songs from a specific artist. Some past releases include Boston’s self-titled album, The Dead Weather, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Maybe it’s to build anticipation for Rock Band 3, but lately Harmonix’s DLC offerings have been a little…off. Last week Miley Cyrus was featured, and on the 29th, six songs by Nickelback will be available to download. “Burn It to the Ground”, “Figured You Out”, “Never Again”, “Photograph”, “Rockstar”, and “This Afternoon” will go for $2 USD, 160 MS Points, or 200 Wii points, choose your poison! UK Charts: Red Dead Redemption Holds Firm, Peace Walker Disappoints

Mon, Jun 21st, 2010, 7:32 am (EST) BY DARRYL

Red Dead Redemption is still holding firm at the top of the UK sales charts, fighting off stiff competition from Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the official 2010 FIFA World Cup game from EA.

Prince of Persia is still there or thereabouts too, thanks to the success of the film, but UFC 2010 Undisputed is falling fast - it just hasn't been able to repeat the huge success of last year's release. More »

E3 2010 Preview: Take-Two

Wed, Jun 9th, 2010, 1:52 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Gaming Union's E3 publisher preview series continues to countdown all the way to the big event next week. Next up on the list is Take-Two Interactive, best known for their large subsidiaries, Rockstar and 2K. These combined companies command some of the most well recognized franchises in gaming such as Grand Theft Auto, Midnight Club, Bioshock, and 2K Sports. As usual, Rockstar is riding a wave of success, most recently with Red Dead Redemption and therefore doesn't need to directly attend E3. However, this doesn't mean that we won't see Rockstar games at E3. Will Grand Theft Auto V be announced at Microsoft's press conference? What about the PS3-exclusive Agent? L.A. Noire? Bully 2? Irrational Games next project? Take-Two's got a lot of potential this year.

While we won't be seeing anything presented by Rockstar at the show, we do know a fair amount about what 2K has in the works. The likes of Sid Meier's Civilization V, Mafia II, as well as series reboots Spec Ops, and XCOM will all be there. Civilization V apparently will continue to build on the established formula the series is revered for. It will feature randomly generated, hexagonal maps, computer controlled city states, an overhauled combat system and much more. Mafia II will attempt to recapture the 20th century Italian organized crime magic of its predecessor. Scheduled for release in August of this year, Mafia's New York-San Francisco hybrid sandbox should be nearly complete. More »

Red Dead Redemption Review

Sat, May 22nd, 2010, 7:13 am (EST) BY JAMIE COURTS

Red Dead Redemption is Rockstar Games' latest third person sandbox game and it returns to the Wild West setting - south-western America in the year 1911 to be precise. It uses technology created for Grand Theft Auto IV, but this time around there are no cars to steal, just horses and wagons. Moving away from the dense streets to a much sparser environment could be seen as a hindrance for this type of game, but Rockstar are keen to prove that isn't the case and given their track record, who would really argue. Why Red Dead Redemption Should Be On Your Radar

Mon, May 10th, 2010, 8:12 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Red Dead Redemption, developed by Rockstar San Diego, is set for release next week, and the anticipation is reaching a fever pitch. The minds behind Grand Theft Auto have proved numerous times that they can make a rich open world game, to say the least. Based on what Rockstar has shown so far, there is growing evidence to suggest Red Dead Redemption will be their best offering to date. For starters, the game is set on the western frontier of turn-of-the-century America, or as it's more commonly known, the wild west. In addition, Redemption boasts a thriving, incredibly detailed world full of dynamic side missions, and some fresh multiplayer modes to boot.

Red Dead Redemption Gameplay Video Analysis

Tue, Apr 13th, 2010, 10:48 am (EST) BY ALEX

Rockstar has released several trailers detailing the gameplay of their upcoming title, Red Dead Redemption. We're going to go over a few details you may have missed, along with some similarities to Rockstar's earlier game, Grand Theft Auto IV.

First off is the HUD itself. The map is nearly identical to the one in GTA IV, complete with icons to mark specific locations along with their height relative to you, what looks to be Marston's health on the left side, and the Dead Eye meter on the right. The Dead Eye system is a new combat tool used in RDR, similar to VATS from Falllout 3, but more on that later. Just above the radar is the ammo count for the weapon you currently have equipped. Seeing as the game takes place in the old west, don't expect many weapons to have enormous clip sizes! In the top-right corner of the screen is something newer, what seems to be a bounty tracker, showing the crime and the amount posted for Marsten's capture (or death). The targeting system looks identical to GTA IV's - complete with lock-on and free-aim modes. More »

Rockstar: Red Dead Redemption Is Our Most Ambitious Title Ever

Thu, Apr 8th, 2010, 2:45 pm (EST) BY KYLE WYNEN

There isn't much question as to whether or not Rockstar's upcoming open-world Western-themed game, Red Dead Redemption, will be a success. The game uses the same engine as GTA IV, but the experience is entirely different. Red Dead Redemption has a larger focus on the open world feature, giving players the opportunity to wander around a huge Wild West expanse. Rockstar's UK General Manager, Neil Stephen, in an interview with MCV, said, "Red Dead Redemption is our most ambitious game to date and our biggest release this year," More »
