GamesCom: Seth Killian Interview

Thu, Sep 2nd, 2010, 6:10 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

Aside from being the Capcom Community Manager, an all-round Street Fighter master and the guy who SFIV's boss was named after, Seth Killian is also one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. It was a pleasure then, to sit down in the relative calm of a hotel room just around the corner from the carnage that was GamesCom and chew the fat about everything from the pains of balancing, to generating "a giant storm of crap." Fri, Aug 20th, 2010, 2:27 pm (EST) BY COLIN

You've seen the trailer for Street Fighter X Tekken, you've seen the playable demo as well as multiple screenshots. What you haven't seen is Namco's version of the fighting crossover, Tekken X Street Fighter. It's still in the very early stages of development, so early that Ryu's character model had to borrow Paul's wardrobe. It's looking pretty good thus far.

Capcom: The King of Fighters

Wed, Aug 11th, 2010, 8:37 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Capcom is, at the moment, the dominant force in the fighting game industry. There's no sense in denying it, regardless of what style of fighter you may prefer. From their popular Versus series of games (Marvel vs Capcom, Tatsunoko vs Capcom), to their original IPs such as Street Fighter, they're successfully holding a lead that most other developers would die for. But is their position really that hard to reach? Is there a secret formula to Capcom's success that no other developer can copy? Not really, it just takes a little bit of time and listening to a few of your fans to ensure a spot as number one.

Though there are many aspects in the fighting genre that are shared across all games, few have done more to assist the multiplayer community like Capcom has. They've set a high bar, an industry standard, but they shouldn't have been the first to do it. Tournament modes, solid netcode, and a few fan-requested updates are all that's really required to turn a 'great' game into an 'awesome' game. Yet despite these pretty basic concepts, other developers continue to mess things up. Leaving out fan favourite characters, or making their games launch with poor online-playability is embarrassing, and makes room for your competition to claim the glory. More »

A screenshot that popped up on Twitter has added more evidence that two new characters will be entering the fray. Naturally the two characters remain a mystery, but it's great to see that support is still be pushed on the game. Not really surprising, considering how popular the series is on mainstream and competitive levels, but still nice. More »

The Best Games Of 2010... So Far

Fri, Jul 9th, 2010, 9:14 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

I'll cut straight to the chase on this one, 2010 has had some phenomenal games. Most years start out a little slow and then wind up into a big bang, but honestly it's hard to imagine anything better around the corner aside from a few releases here or there.

So before we get all wrapped up in Halo: Reach, or severely addicted to the latest MMO, let's take this time to reflect upon the phenomenal games that the first half of 2010 have brought to us. More »

E3 2010: Mortal Kombat Preview

Fri, Jul 2nd, 2010, 4:06 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Mortal Kombat is one of those classic franchises that manage to conjure up feelings of nostalgia in people who wouldn't normally consider themselves "hardcore" gamers. With such a broad appeal, it comes as no surprise that the reveal of a new Mortal Kombat installment makes people take notice. Recently, Warner Bros. acquired the series from Midway and announced its ninth iteration, simply titled Mortal Kombat. The game boosts gorgeous visuals, numerous fatalities, and a level of gore that shocks and amazes at the same time.

The developers over at NetherRealm Studios have said Street Fighter IV's success convinced them they were on the right track using a classic 2D plan with an improved visual presentation. The 2D plan and classic gameplay gives the modern Mortal Kombat a throwback feel, comparable to Mortal Kombat II. The improved visuals really can't be overstated - it looks absolutely beautiful, in a strange, gruesome way. Everything in Mortal Kombat's small, contained environments looks crisp and runs smoothly. The NPD Group have released the overall sales numbers for the month of April 2010, and the results don't inspire much confidence, unless you happen to be Sam Fisher. The industry experienced a 26 percent decline in revenue compared with this time last year. One exception is PlayStation 3, Sony is quick to point out their platform is only one with "growth both year over year (42.6 percent) and year to date (37.2 percent)." Five Mechanics Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Needs To Be A True Successor

Wed, May 5th, 2010, 8:52 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Marvel vs Capcom 3 has caused quite a bit of a stir amongst the gaming community, as hype and anticipation for the game's announcement has been years in the making. Since then everyone and anyone has been throwing down character speculations and wish lists as to who their favorite fighting team would be, but personally I'm far more interested to see what mechanics will make it from the last game to this next-gen rebirth. After all it was the speed, chaos, and 'cool factor' that made Marvel vs Capcom 2 such a blast to play. Being able to see Wolverine tear up Ryu with his claws was just a sweet bonus. More »
