Top Ten RPGs Of This Generation... So Far

Sat, Aug 28th, 2010, 12:46 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

This console generation has seen a remarkable shift in what it means to be a role-playing game. Elements that have traditionally been exclusive to RPGs - such as leveling/upgrading characters and equipment, branching, non-linear plots, and collectible items - have begun to be incorporated in numerous other genres, blurring the lines between them. However, the core RPG genre remains intact, featuring a wide variety of the best Western and Eastern game designers have to offer. This is Gaming Union's top ten RPGs of this console generation (roughly 2005 to present), in alphabetical order.

First Glimpse Of Tekken X Street Fighter

Fri, Aug 20th, 2010, 2:27 pm (EST) BY COLIN

You've seen the trailer for Street Fighter X Tekken, you've seen the playable demo as well as multiple screenshots. What you haven't seen is Namco's version of the fighting crossover, Tekken X Street Fighter. It's still in the very early stages of development, so early that Ryu's character model had to borrow Paul's wardrobe. It's looking pretty good thus far.

Capcom: The King of Fighters

Wed, Aug 11th, 2010, 8:37 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Capcom is, at the moment, the dominant force in the fighting game industry. There's no sense in denying it, regardless of what style of fighter you may prefer. From their popular Versus series of games (Marvel vs Capcom, Tatsunoko vs Capcom), to their original IPs such as Street Fighter, they're successfully holding a lead that most other developers would die for. But is their position really that hard to reach? Is there a secret formula to Capcom's success that no other developer can copy? Not really, it just takes a little bit of time and listening to a few of your fans to ensure a spot as number one.

Though there are many aspects in the fighting genre that are shared across all games, few have done more to assist the multiplayer community like Capcom has. They've set a high bar, an industry standard, but they shouldn't have been the first to do it. Tournament modes, solid netcode, and a few fan-requested updates are all that's really required to turn a 'great' game into an 'awesome' game. Yet despite these pretty basic concepts, other developers continue to mess things up. Leaving out fan favourite characters, or making their games launch with poor online-playability is embarrassing, and makes room for your competition to claim the glory. More »

Tekken X Street Fighter Is Confirmed

Sat, Jul 24th, 2010, 5:08 pm (EST) BY COLIN

As it turns out, right after the announcement and playable demo of Street Fighter X Tekken at Capcom's Comic-Con Panel, Namco's Katsuhiro Harada followed suit with his own confirmation that Tekken X Street Fighter is indeed in development. Fighting game fans now have not only one game but two to look forward to.

While Street Fighter X Tekken will run on the Street Fighter IV engine, Namco's take on the crossover is rumoured to be built in the style of Tekken games where fights are held in a 3D arena. Capcom's Ono does say that the games won't see release any time soon and that Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 will have to satiate fans for the time being. More »

Big news for fighting game fans all over as the rumours look to be very true indeed. Capcom's announced at the San Diego Comic-Con that Street Fighter X Tekken is indeed in the works. Not to mention that it looks to play in that 2.5D plane, à la, Street Fighter IV.

This year's North American fighting game tournament has round itself up, with international competitor Daigo Umehara coming out on top for the Super Street Fighter 4 championship. This year saw a lot of fantastic match-ups and some very high-level tournament play, including a few players who made it into the semi-finals using a 'pad' instead of a 'stick'. Exciting stuff for those interested in the world of fighting games. More »

Five Mechanics Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Needs To Be A True Successor

Wed, May 5th, 2010, 8:52 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Marvel vs Capcom 3 has caused quite a bit of a stir amongst the gaming community, as hype and anticipation for the game's announcement has been years in the making. Since then everyone and anyone has been throwing down character speculations and wish lists as to who their favorite fighting team would be, but personally I'm far more interested to see what mechanics will make it from the last game to this next-gen rebirth. After all it was the speed, chaos, and 'cool factor' that made Marvel vs Capcom 2 such a blast to play. Being able to see Wolverine tear up Ryu with his claws was just a sweet bonus. More »

Why Mainstream Gaming Needs Super Street Fighter 4

Mon, Apr 19th, 2010, 8:28 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Street Fighter is one of the best known and easily identifiable franchises in the gaming industry, let alone for fighting games. It holds history as one of the first major arcade fighting-game successes, has a main character about as identifiable as Mario or Master Chief, and boasts an absolutely terrible movie featuring Raul Julia (who was awesome). It's for all those reasons and more that Super Street Fighter 4 is a necessity for the gaming industry, let alone mainstream gamers.

It seems like a pretty sensationalist statement, but how many other games actively search for ways to be more fan driven? How many try to encourage tournaments between friends or try to bridge the distance gap in game communities? Few companies have gone as far as Capcom in making a solid multiplayer experience, let alone a decent fighting game and while the Street Fighter series may not be for everyone (I personally prefer Guilty Gear) it cannot be denied that some aspects of Super Street Fighter 4 should be universal to all other fighting game titles. Defining Immersion: The Fighting Genre

Tue, Jan 19th, 2010, 9:24 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

How to properly capture and engage the average gamer is something that companies have been struggling with for a very long time. As tastes between individuals vary greatly, it's natural that each and every person will define immersion differently. Gaming Union covered a keynote speech by Yannis Mallat at DIG London 2009, in which he described how Ubisoft tests to ensure their games thoroughly have the ability to capture an audience before moving into full development. However even once a game has a core mechanic down that doesn't mean it'll be an inherent success. More »

After the success of Tekken: Dark Resurrection, it wasn't a huge surprise when Namco Bandai announced that Tekken 6 would also be arriving on the PlayStation Portable. Impressively though, Namco are doing everything they can to make the Portable version as close possible to the home console, with the game including a ton of characters, stages and modes. How does this all translate to Sony's handheld offering? More »
