Gamescom 2010: Press Conference Previews

Tue, Aug 10th, 2010, 8:23 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Gamescom, Europe's stop on the major game convention circuit, is just around the corner, kicking off with three press conferences from Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Sony next Tuesday. The German hosted event has risen to prominence over the past couple years, now viewed by publishers as an additional avenue (alongside E3 and TGS) for major global announcements - Sony and Microsoft revealed the PS3 Slim and Fable III at Gamescom 2009, respectively. With that in mind, anticipation for next week's convention is high, so we've broken down what to expect from the big three conferences.

Why Microsoft Are Losing The Exclusives Battle

Mon, Jul 12th, 2010, 6:57 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

At E3 2008, Square Enix’s Yoichi Wada shocked the gaming world. Taking to the stage at Microsoft's press conference, he announced that the latest in a series long associated with PlayStation would no longer be exclusive to Sony. Final Fantasy XIII was hitting Xbox 360.

It was a huge surprise, perhaps E3 2008's only true megaton, an increasingly rare phenomena for an event beset by pre-show leaks. Comments threads and forums around the world exploded with rage. More »

E3 2010 Preview: Sony

Tue, Jun 15th, 2010, 1:20 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

After watching Microsoft's E3 press conference held earlier today, all eyes are on Sony's event tomorrow. Microsoft generally underwhelmed with their offering, which has given Sony a massive opportunity to steal the show. Will they seize on it? All signs point to yes. Based on Sony's string of pre-E3 major game announcements - LittleBigPlanet 2, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Killzone 3, InFamous 2, and Motorstorm: Apocalypse - there's good reason to believe the PlayStation maker has got something big in the works. Why else would they let so much slip? There's still the likes of Resistance 3, Gran Turismo 5, The Last Guardian, Jaffe's secret project, Pixeljunk Shooter 2, a new PSP, a premium PSN service, and more to talk about.

While Sony has already announced many of their upcoming sequels, that doesn't mean they won't make an appearance at the press conference. A new trailer or demo for LittleBigPlanet 2, InFamous 2 and Motorstorm: Apocalypse seems very likely. My money is on Killzone 3 to show up in the form of a 3D demo, as Sony will be eager to promote 3D in many of their top tier first-party titles. More »

Sony Announces InFamous 2

Fri, Jun 4th, 2010, 5:58 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Sony has apparently decided to take advantage of the pre-E3 lull in major news and announcements. The company has unveiled several big name new titles in the run up to E3 such as LittleBigPlanet 2, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Killzone 3, and now InFamous 2.

The latest issue of Game Informer features an InFamous 2 cover story. Not much is known about the game at this point except the vague promise of a "new city, new powers and new gameplay." Sony says developer Sucker Punch have "improved every aspect of it," though take that with a grain of salt, what else would you expect them to say? More »

Rumor: ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD Bundle Coming To PS3

Wed, Jun 2nd, 2010, 12:00 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Every year the lead up to E3 is a time where gaming enthusiasts do their best to predict the future of the industry, the results of this speculation range from credible to bizarre. One rumor that's getting a large amount of circulation is the announcement of an HD bundle of Team ICO's classic PS2 titles, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

There are a few things about this rumor which make it seem fairly credible. First, Team ICO's latest product and PS3 debut, The Last Guardian, is on the horizon and will likely have a big showing at E3. Second, Sony has definitely taken note of the commercial success of a similar bundle the company released last year, God of War Collection. The God of War bundle brought the first two installments to Blu-ray on PS3 in preparation for God of War III. More »

Sony came into their conference with all guns blazing as they showed a host of games for their premier system, the PlayStation 3.

The collection was large, and there were a lot of multi-platform titles on show, but they also did some extensive live demos of the games which are coming exclusively to their system. There was also a large quantity of other exclusive titles available for playing on the show floor. More »
