Top Ten Development Studios Right Now

Thu, Aug 19th, 2010, 10:43 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Games have always been behind other creative mediums - such as film, music, and literature - when it comes to making consumption choices based on the team behind a product, as opposed to its franchise tag or brand. That being said, the "hardcore", enthusiast crowd has always had a deep appreciation and sense of loyalty toward the select group of studios that continually produce quality. Thankfully, that trend is slowly beginning to penetrate mainstream gaming.

With that in mind, we decided to compile a list of the top development studios at the present moment - studios that generate a great deal of anticipation behind their endeavors, and are an influential force in the industry. This list is specifically directed towards individual teams, not publishers (i.e. Nintendo) or multiple teams that produce games under a common label (i.e. Ubisoft Montreal). More »

Splinter Cell Conviction Nears 2 Million Sales

Mon, Jul 12th, 2010, 3:00 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

Despite only being launched in April 2010, Splinter Cell: Conviction has managed to sell 1.9 million copies, according to Ubisoft's first-quarter report.

Despite this, Ubisoft have been quite reserved on their opinion about the sales. They simply stated that they were "solid", which means they're probably hoping it will go on from here to sell more. More »

E3 2010: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Preview

Thu, Jun 17th, 2010, 1:29 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was announced earlier this year by Ubisoft as a continuation of Ezio's (the Assassin's Creed II protagonist) journey. The company also revealed that multiplayer would be a feature in Assassin's Creed for the first time. Gaming Union got a chance to check out both the single and multiplayer components earlier. Some hands-on impressions of multiplayer will follow, but for now we'll focus on the campaign.

The demo began with a siege on the Auditore countryside villa, Ezio's base of operations in the last game. A powerful group of men from Rome, somehow associated with the Pope from AC II, are looking to wipe out the Assassins. They came with a massive army at their disposal complete with siege towers, legions of troops, arrows, the works. Ezio beings by racing through the narrow streets on his unwieldy horse, as boulders, arrows, and crumpling buildings rain down from the sky above. The Ubisoft Montreal developer walking us through the section stressed the emphasis they've put on more focused, "memorable" moments for Brotherhood - best illustrated by the next cannon section. Ezio took control of a cannon on the villa walls to shoot down siege towers as they approached. The entire scene looked fantastic. It was one of the most hectic, epic scenes I've seen so far from the series. More »

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands Review

Thu, May 20th, 2010, 6:25 am (EST) BY DARRYL

It's been quite a few years since the last installment into the Prince of Persia "Sands of Time" series, with the last iteration being The Two Thrones in 2005. The Forgotten Sands is actually the fourth iteration in this Prince of Persia canon, and it takes place between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within. Despite this information, it's actually quite insignificant as nothing is really referenced in any great detail from any of the other titles - an interesting decision indeed. More »

Splinter Cell Conviction Has Been Worth The Wait; Here's Why

Mon, Apr 12th, 2010, 9:51 am (EST) BY ADAM MA

There comes a point in time when a videogame character reaches the end of their life, and the torch must be passed on. This generally means the end of a major point in the franchise, when everything we know will be turned up on its head and the very fabric of the character’s being is put to the test. In the case of Splinter Cell that character is Sam Fisher, and if Splinter Cell: Conviction is going to be his last hurrah then it's almost guaranteed to be worth the wait. It’s also nice to see that the extended development cycle was considered to make sure the game ended up how the developers wanted it, as opposed to simply trying to cash-in on the franchise. Here's the breakdown: More »

Splinter Cell: Conviction Demo Dissection

Fri, Mar 19th, 2010, 10:07 am (EST) BY ADAM MA

Part of the excitement of the Splinter Cell franchise has always been the slow methodical kill. Metal Gear Solid almost came close in that regard, but since the game was mostly about not being seen in the first place, it boiled down to Splinter Cell to give me that modern-day ninja feel. As a result it's been a rough road watching how Ubisoft has transformed a very defined franchise into something more 'cinematic and exciting'. Will sneaking be the same? How intelligent will enemy AI be? There's a lot that goes into making a game more dynamic feeling, and more often then not FPS titles fall short. Playing through the demo of Splinter Cell: Conviction though reveals that there's still work that could be done. More »
