GamesCom: inFamous 2 Hands-On

Mon, Aug 23rd, 2010, 6:01 pm (EST) BY JAMIE FELTHAM

Given that inFamous 2 was only shown in trailer form to most of the press at E3 I was fairly surprised to see a stack of screens lined up for the public to play the game at GamesCom this year. Still, I didn't sit around stunned too long; I needed to get my hands on Cole's next adventure.

Remember that awesome gameplay debut that was shown a few weeks back? That was what was on display here, only tweaked with our hero's new outfit, a few more enemies, and some hints to help you along the way. The most notable part of the demo for me was right at the start as you battle your way through hordes of swamp monsters (huge beasts with blades for arms and mouths like Resident Evil 5's infected). Top Ten Development Studios Right Now

Thu, Aug 19th, 2010, 10:43 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Games have always been behind other creative mediums - such as film, music, and literature - when it comes to making consumption choices based on the team behind a product, as opposed to its franchise tag or brand. That being said, the "hardcore", enthusiast crowd has always had a deep appreciation and sense of loyalty toward the select group of studios that continually produce quality. Thankfully, that trend is slowly beginning to penetrate mainstream gaming.

With that in mind, we decided to compile a list of the top development studios at the present moment - studios that generate a great deal of anticipation behind their endeavors, and are an influential force in the industry. This list is specifically directed towards individual teams, not publishers (i.e. Nintendo) or multiple teams that produce games under a common label (i.e. Ubisoft Montreal). More »

Uncharted 2: Siege Expansion Pack Review

Mon, May 24th, 2010, 3:47 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

The steady stream of downloadable content from Naughty Dog continues, as the third expansion pack for Uncharted 2's multiplayer, the Siege pack, is upon us. Siege offers a wide variety of add-ons such as a new cooperative game type, competitive maps, character skins, and trophies. These new offerings will no doubt satisfy regular Uncharted players - the new maps are possibly the best yet, and the additional trophies will give players something to strive for. Siege co-op mode is an interesting twist on the survival arenas, but is ultimately more of the same. However, The Siege DLC certainly adds as a timely reminder to those who've stepped away from Uncharted 2, about how enjoyable Uncharted 2's multiplayer really is. More »

Crysis 2 Comparisons Are Just Alienating Gamers

Crysis 2 Comparisons Are Just Alienating Gamers

Wed, Apr 14th, 2010, 3:15 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

It's a pretty common standard in the gaming industry that when announcing a new title, you must remind everyone else that your game will be the absolute best. Better then the competition at least, because why else would a developer bother making a game? While most developers generally highlight gameplay or level design, Crysis 2 is taking a bit of a different turn. It's a little unusual for FPS title to boast about anything other then multiplayer these days but Richard Morgan, popular sci-fi author and current writer for Crysis 2, has taken to launching a full assault against bad storytelling.

It's definitely an interesting tactic, especially when you consider how many games before Crysis 2 have boasted a good plot as part of their selling points. From Halo to Modern Warfare Morgan is leaving no stone unturned, most recently calling out Halo's storytelling to be filled with the typical archetype characters. It's an interesting way to identify yourself as a gamer who's looking to really appeal to other gamers, but is it even necessary? Many people who bought into either franchise were interested in the multiplayer aspect alone, and it's not like the first Crysis had a very riveting storyline. In fact most remember Crysis as the game that was unplayable on their computer (at the time) due to high graphical demands. More »

Comparing Immersion In God Of War III And Uncharted 2

Comparing Immersion In God Of War III And Uncharted 2

Sun, Mar 28th, 2010, 7:23 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

The current generation of games has produced immersive experiences which are beginning to reach the level of literature and cinema. With the recent release of God of War III on PlayStation 3, many want to know how it compares in terms of overall immersion - graphics, animations, storytelling, etc... - to the best in gaming. Uncharted 2, known for its gorgeous visuals, fluid animations, and likable characters, serves as a good point of comparison. Granted, there are many other factors which create an immersive experience, but for the purpose of this article we’ll focus on these three. While God of War III is a fantastic game and technical achievement, it comes up slightly short of matching the magic Naughty Dog created with Uncharted 2.

Both franchises have become synonymous which cutting edge visuals; God of War pushed the PS2 to its limits and the original Uncharted was a showcase for the PS3. While both God of War III and Uncharted 2 feature spectacular graphics, Uncharted impresses on a more consistent basis. Everything looks polished throughout the world; the lighting is fantastic, colours are vibrant, and textures are crisp. The visual esthetic encourages exploration. God of War is slightly less consistent. The climactic set pieces are absolutely stunning, which makes the environments between set pieces feel especially plain. That being said, it’s never a bad looking game, but some sequences are visually forgettable. This inconsistency in God of War can also be observed in the character models. Kratos is, without a doubt, one of the most detailed characters in gaming thus far. This makes the lack of detail placed into the supporting characters glaring. Uncharted doesn’t suffer from these problems. More »

How Voice Acting Has Changed The Video Games Industry

Sat, Mar 13th, 2010, 3:58 pm (EST) BY FOZZIE

Voice acting, as defined by Wikipedia, is the act of "providing one's voice to an animated character." Though its origin is unknown it's been safely lodged in the acting world for quite some time now. Disney, as many of you are well aware, has been well known for its animated movies and, more impressively, as a voice acting pioneer. Snow White (1937) was the company's first full-length animated feature film made and Adriana Caselotti voiced the movie's title character. More »

God Of War Team 'Inspired' By Killzone, Uncharted's Visuals

Thu, Feb 25th, 2010, 4:28 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

God of War III Director Stig Asmussen has revealed that his team was 'inspired' by the graphical strides made by Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2. Asmussen believes that these games "raised the bar" in terms of graphics and that he hopes God of War III will be thought of "in the same way." Asmussen made these remarks in the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, which is doing a special on the evolution of God of War III.

"I think we were really scared about [God Of War 3's] visuals up until E3. When we did our press release back in March, we felt pretty good about it. But then we see games that are raising the bar like Uncharted 2 obviously did, and Killzone 2," Asmussen stated. He continued, "I think we just need to make something that, you know, people will talk about in the same way. It's a different game, but we'd be happy at that point." More »

A new endeavour for Naughty Dog, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune initially appeared on the PlayStation 3 in 2007 to much acclaim. It's sales matched, and in December of 2008, Naughty Dog confirmed they were working on a sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
