E3 2010: Mortal Kombat Preview

Fri, Jul 2nd, 2010, 4:06 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Mortal Kombat is one of those classic franchises that manage to conjure up feelings of nostalgia in people who wouldn't normally consider themselves "hardcore" gamers. With such a broad appeal, it comes as no surprise that the reveal of a new Mortal Kombat installment makes people take notice. Recently, Warner Bros. acquired the series from Midway and announced its ninth iteration, simply titled Mortal Kombat. The game boosts gorgeous visuals, numerous fatalities, and a level of gore that shocks and amazes at the same time.

The developers over at NetherRealm Studios have said Street Fighter IV's success convinced them they were on the right track using a classic 2D plan with an improved visual presentation. The 2D plan and classic gameplay gives the modern Mortal Kombat a throwback feel, comparable to Mortal Kombat II. The improved visuals really can't be overstated - it looks absolutely beautiful, in a strange, gruesome way. Everything in Mortal Kombat's small, contained environments looks crisp and runs smoothly. The F.E.A.R. series has been through a turbulent ride in its relatively short lifespan, changing publishers and developers, and an ugly battle over the franchise rights. Despite these headaches, F.E.A.R. is alive and well, figuratively speaking. The Future of Modern Warfare

Thu, Mar 25th, 2010, 12:52 am (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Recent events at Infinity Ward, the team behind Modern Warfare 2, have forever changed the future of the Modern Warfare franchise. On March 1st, the heads of Infinity Ward, Jason West and Vince Zampella, were fired by Activision for reasons that are not completely clear. The widely held belief is that the dispute involved the direction of future Modern Warfare titles, possibly that West and Zampella wanted to take it in a new direction their owner wasn’t comfortable with. A lawsuit filed by West and Zampella for compensation and control of the Modern Warfare IP quickly followed. This whole debacle raises the question, where does Modern Warfare go from here? More »
