Ever heard of the Goldshire Inn on Moon Guard? It's a well known locale for red light role-playing activity in Blizzard's world dominating MMO, World of Warcraft. After complaints were made, Blizzard has affirmed that they will vigilantly police the issue.

Goldshire Inn, the start point for the human race, has become More »

StarCraft II: What To Expect Next

Wed, Aug 4th, 2010, 9:25 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

StarCraft 2 has been a massive hit, and everyone knows it. The game came close to two million copies in its first two days of release, and there's no telling when it'll stop. That being said, there were a lot of things about it that weren't exactly new. The teams were the same, units as a whole remained intact (or were a little rebalanced). For as great as StarCraft 2 is, there's really not much 'new' content as a whole in there; it's really just an updated version of Brood War. This isn't a bad thing though, as it just means that Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void will have a lot more features than we may expect.

The first thing that comes to mind is units. Re-balances will come over time with patches and expansions, but looking at the way single player campaign for Wings of Liberty is designed, we're more likely to see unit swaps in the next expansion than anything else. Plenty of units were removed from the multiplayer campaign that fans may want to see - such as Firebats. No doubt Blizzard will want to introduce more units that may not see the light of day for Zerg and Protoss as well. Rather than playing with a game engine that's been clearly well refined at this point, it makes more sense to fine-tune than change. New and returning units would change the game considerably, with little pressure being applied to the core gameplay. StarCraft II Sells 1.8 Million On First Day

Sat, Jul 31st, 2010, 10:04 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Apparently StarCraft II has managed to sell almost 2 million units on its first day. Excluding sales from Korea since Blizzard effectively gave the game to fans with a World of Warcraft account for free.

The 1.8 million figure includes both retail and digital purchases from North America and Europe. Roughly 31% of that comprises of digital purchases made through Battle.net with the remainder being physical retail copies from North America and Europe. More »

Blizzard's Community Manager The First Victim Of Real ID

Thu, Jul 8th, 2010, 8:53 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Blizzard recently announced that their very own Battle.net forums was to implement a new policy where users' first and last names were to be used. They called it Real ID and it was just a matter of time before it sparked controversy among the fan base. In an ironic turn of events, the first casualty of Blizzard's Real ID is none other then their very own community manager, Bashiok.

In an attempt to defend the change in policy, Bashiok posted his real name in the World of Warcraft forums. Within minutes, pretty much everything about him was exposed. From key points in his life to the name of his wife and child and even his room mate. Photos of his house and what street he lives on where also posted up thanks to Google Street View. More »

Mon, Jul 5th, 2010, 1:30 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

Final Fantasy XIV is one of Square Enix's hottest properties coming out this year and naturally, there are a lot of questions that arise from a game of this nature, especially since it succeeds Final Fantasy XI.

We sat down with Hiromichi Tanaka, the game's director and Yasu Kurosawa, the game's community manager, at E3 2010 to ask them some questions about their upcoming project. More »

E3 2010: Tera Hands-On Preview

Fri, Jul 2nd, 2010, 1:22 pm (EST) BY COLIN

When people think of MMOs, they usually think of the most popular one, World of Warcraft. However, while some developers might attempt to copy it thinking that in doing so, they'll copy its success, the real secret is to separate themselves from the likes of it. This is exactly what En Masse and Bluehole Studio have done with their latest MMORPG, Tera Online: The Exiled Realm of Arborea. It claims to be the first true action MMO and it certainly looks that way. The kind folks at En Masse let us experience the demo at E3 and, to put it simply, it was one heck of a rush. More »

E3 2010: Final Fantasy XIV Preview

Thu, Jul 1st, 2010, 11:23 am (EST) BY DARRYL

Coming from a background of liking Final Fantasy and caring very little about MMOs, Final Fantasy XI served as a great window into a new world. While most Final Fantasy fans knew the game wasn't going to be of the typical ilk, there was still the urge to check it out and give it a chance. Those that did give it a chance typically fell in love with it, despite its very unforgiving nature. However, despite Square Enix's best attempts to keep players interested with numerous expansion packs, the game's attraction started to wane.

With this in mind, they came up with a solution - one that was extremely unexpected, but expected at the same time - Final Fantasy XIV. A game that on the surface looks almost identical to its predecessor. All of the races have been retained, albeit with different names, and the landscapes have the same graphical style. Square Enix believe that the familiarity will see players more inclined to drop their Final Fantasy XI accounts and move over to Final Fantasy XIV, while also hoping that all the new gameplay innovations will draw in other players from games like the behemoth that is World of Warcraft. South Koreans Getting StarCraft II Free

South Koreans Getting StarCraft II Free

Wed, Jun 30th, 2010, 11:34 am (EST) BY JAMIE COURTS

In a move to make Blizzard Entertainment an unstoppable force in South Korea, Blizzard has announced that any World of WarCraft players with an active subscription will be able to play StarCraft II free of charge. The only catch to the free play of StarCraft II is that the game is only playable as long as the World of WarCraft account is active.

This is quite the bold move for Blizzard considering the largest fan base for StarCraft comes from South Korea. In one sense it is a lot less copes that will be sold to the Korean public, but at the same time, it spurs a massive boost to subscriptions for World of WarCraft, which already has around 12 million active subscriptions. E3 2010: Rift: Planes of Telara Preview

Thu, Jun 17th, 2010, 1:45 pm (EST) BY ALEX

We had the opportunity to briefly check out Rift: Planes of Telara at last year's E3 (under the name Heroes of Telara) but this year, Trion Worlds had a much more... complete version to show us. Lots has changed in the game, so let’s take a brief overview of what we saw at this year's E3.

There are two factions in Rift, the Guardians and the Defiant. The Guardians were reborn by the Gods, and strive to rebuild the world as a holy place. The Defiant follow a more technology-oriented path, choosing to make their own destiny. Each faction has access to every type of class, though for certain classes factions must achieve a higher level in order to unlock them. The character creation system is pretty deep, letting players use a slider to mould their avatar's face, along with standard options for hair, gender, and the like. More »

E3 2010 Preview: Activision

Fri, Jun 11th, 2010, 12:35 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Activision is a company that's been having a bit of a rough spot this past year, at least in the publicity department. A slew of Guitar Hero games, the Infinity Ward drama, and the occasional closing of a development studio never gives a good impression, but it appears this year the publisher has a pretty impressive lineup of things to show the world. E3 is a chance to turn things around, at least somewhat, and it looks like as though Activision have secured some pretty fantastic games. Fact, speculation, and alternate realities come together for this E3 Preview: Activision Edition.

First and foremost comes Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions in which Activision hopes that a Spider-Man game without massive cities to swing around will sell well. All joking aside, gamers have already been given a taste of the two dimensions that will be featured (both based off of real comic book worlds) and E3 is the perfect time to unveil the last two. Or just one, who knows. On the other end of the comic book spectrum is their latest addition to the Transformers world, who's release date is just around the corner. Still it wouldn't be surprising if they announced some last minute additions to the game, gave reviews another shot at the demo and generally pushed some hype. Maybe that's just me wishing they would add Blackout to the Decepticon lineup. More »
