Capcom To Only Develop New IPs In Japan: Blame GRIN

In a Q & A phone call posted from Capcom's investor relations, an undisclosed representative laid out plans to keep original intellectual properties on the Japanese development side of the company. The call cited the GRIN studios version of the latest Bionic commando game as a reason for the planned shift in development.
Our experience with Bionic Commando has demonstrated the difficulty of outsourcing the development of new titles to overseas companies. We are considering ways to separate the roles of activities in Japan and overseas.
As for the rest of the western developers under Capcom the representative spoke of using western developers for preexisting franchises.
Overseas companies may be used mostly to develop titles for existing game series with well-established characters and universal themes. Overseas companies will also handle certain parts and/or lineups of such games.
It looks like development of original titles from Western developers will be scrapped, at least for the next year. At the same time, there may be some interesting new versions of established Capcom titles coming out of the woodwork.
