Child Gamer Numbers Have Grown, Says The NPD Group

The number of child gamers have grown quite a bit since 2009 according to The NPD Group who states that the population growth of children age 2 to 17 have increased 1.54 percent in the US while the gaming population of that age group has grown 12.68 percent. According to IndustryGamers, this results in over 90 percent of the age group who actively game in the US.

"Year-to-date through August 2011, kids comprised 44 percent of new physical software dollar sales, representing a vitally important consumer segment for the games industry," said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. "Knowing how kids are spending their gaming time and dollars in both traditional and non-traditional outlets is key to staying relevant to this highly engaged audience."

The fastest growth is seen in the age group of children ages 2 to 5 followed by growth of children gamers of the female gender and teens ages 15 to 17. In addition, mobile devices have also seen a big increase in gaming activity and can be attributed to the growth of kid gamers. Although IndustryGamers notes that parents and children have spent much more on physical games than mobile apps in the last three months.
