Fan-made Duke Nukem Game Gets Approval
Looks like Gearbox's Duke Nukem Forever, formally 3D Realms', isn't the only Duke Nukem project in the pipeline. A fan-made remake of the 1996 Duke Nukem 3D is in the works after receiving approval from Gearbox and Take Two.
The fan-made title is called Duke Nukem: Next Gen and is being built with the Unreal Engine 3. According to a post on the official Gearbox forum, the game will include a three episode single player campaign and a full-on multiplayer mode. The game will be free for all to download.
"I contacted George Broussard and Scott Miller [of original Duke Nukem creator 3D Realms], to start a conversation about the project," project lead Frederik "Fresch" Schreiber explained.
"The shots managed to convince Scott Miller to a certain degree, but the project was only doable if Take-Two would approve it.
"Thinking that Gearbox might have a better relationship to Take-Two than 3D Realms, I contacted AdamF, who passed me through to PJ Putnam, vice president and general counsel of Gearbox Software.
"Luckily Gearbox was interested in supporting the project, which resulted in a personal non-commercial license to Duke Nukem."
Duke Nukem: Next Gen will be out "when it's done," however a multiplayer test will be released before then to mark the project's "first official milestone release." It's being built for the PlayStatin 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
