iGame of the Week: Rolando 2
iPhone Game of the Week returns after an extended E3 hiatus, with a new name making it easier to include iPad games into the weekly rotation. The format remains the same - every weekend a member of the Gaming Union staff will brighten your day with tales from their adventures through the world of iGaming. Without further ado, this week's iGame of the Week is the charming and addictive Rolando 2.
Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid
Rolando 2, developed by Hand Circus, follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, continuing to bring creative, tilt-based platforming to the iPhone. Rolando's rolling platform mechanic is kept fresh thanks to constantly inventive level design, and tight controls. The presentation also shines with a vibrant '2.5D' cartoon art style, and an extremely catchy, varied soundtrack.
The objective is to roll the charming little Rolandos through each level by taking direct control over them, the angle of the environment, or even gravity itself. Thanks to rock solid controls - which primarily consistent of tilting the iPhone combined with the occasional swipe to jump - Rolando 2 never feels too frustrating.
Nobody can reasonably criticize Rolando 2 for lacking personality. On the contrary, it's bursting from the seems. Everything from the vibrant cartoon visuals, tidbits of British nobility, and a memorable soundtrack make its presentation unique.
The game also possesses a great deal of replay value on top of its other accomplishments. Previously completed levels can be replayed at any time to find the many hidden items, complete time trials, or place on the leaderboards. There's plenty to come back to after the initial playthrough.
Overall, Rolando 2 is a fantastic game for all these reasons, easily one of the best on the iPhone. If you own an iPhone, you owe it to yourself to try out this game.
