Latest Wii System Update Causing System Failures

It appears that Nintendo's latest Wii system update, which we reported on earlier this week, is causing users who have never installed homebrew (unlicensed code not approved from Nintendo) on their system to have their consoles become unusable.

The issues revolves around a specific part of the recent update, which updates an sector in the Wii's hardware where the system boots from. According to various sources, the code Nintendo is using to update this sector is buggy in some instances and causes data to not be overwritten as usual, causing the boot sector to become corrupted. In turn, this stops the console from booting up properly and requires a repair or replacement.

Those who have never modified their systems and are without warranty due to being an early adopter should check this post on Nintendo's official tech support forums, which gives instructions to get a free repair.
