Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Preview

Gaming Union hooked up with Activision for a look at Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. The game takes place during the Civil War story arc in the Marvel universe, where a fight between the heroes and villains causes an explosion that kills over 600 civilians.

The US government passes an act that forces anyone with super-human powers to register as a weapon of mass destruction. You must choose between the Pro-Registration (Security) side headed up by Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic, or the Anti-Registration (Freedom) side headed up by Captain America and Luke Cage. Some heroes are only available on one of the sides, and the ending will be determined by which side you pick.

The game play is the same as the first game, where you take control of four Marvel heroes and use their unique abilities to take down your opponents. This time around, instead of having penalties for swapping out heroes, you can switch them out at will. Instead of just powering up a single hero’s attack, two heroes can combine their attacks for a more powerful attack that attacks multiple enemies at once --- Activision has confirmed at least 250 different combinations. The player will have complete control over these attacks, such as when Songbird creates a sound shield around Juggernaut that allows him to destroy anything he runs into for a short period of time. These advancements are allowed by the sequel adding full support for the Havok physics engine, allowing the Marvel characters to interact with everything in the environment.

New to the sequel is the ability for everyone playing online multiplayer to be able to save their data and earn achievements together, just as if you were playing the game alone or in offline multiplayer. You can also play as the villains this time around, such as Venom and the Green Goblin. The game is currently set for a September 2009 release in North America.
