Microsoft's Xbox 360 Dominates Sony's PlayStation 3

Research from the NPD Group suggests Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has solidified its home lead over Sony’s PlayStation 3, outselling it by more than 2.7 million units during the 2011 holiday season.

Citing statistics from the NPD research group, Microsoft reported on Friday that December sales of the Xbox 360 had solidified its 12 month reign as the US’ best-selling and fastest growing games console. Specifically the NPD’s findings suggested Microsoft’s console had captured 49 percent of 2011’s games industry consumer spending, accruing roughly $6.7 billion in hardware and games sales.

NPD went on to report that the strong 2011 US sales meant that the Xbox 360 currently holds a massive 46 percent stake of the overall current generation console market. The news follows Microsoft’s 2012 CES boast that, according to its internal figures, it had now sold “66 million Xbox 360 consoles and more than 18 million Kinect sensors worldwide.”
