New 2D HD Sonic Game Revealed

New 2D HD Sonic Game Revealed

After years and years of what some would consider sub-par 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games, it appears SEGA has finally listened to its fans, revealing a new 2D HD Sonic game today, the day of the 10th anniversary of the Dreamcast console, SEGA's last console before they became a software-only business. Sega of America's Ken Balough had this to say about the title:

Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay.

Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots.

The tagline in the teaser states that "Speed returns, in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up". Balough also confirmed this game will be not be a retro remake, instead being an entirely new game built in HD.

The game will be out in 2010, although no consoles were revealed (although due to the HD tagline, it's obvious this is either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, or both of them). A teaser website has been released, although it only features a glimpse of the game's concept artwork at the moment.
