Nintendo Taking Mario To The Next Level

Going into this year's Nintendo E3 conference, it's unlikely that anyone thought Nintendo would announce two new Mario games for the Nintendo Wii. However, here we are with both New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Mario Galaxy 2 to look forward to.

After the success of New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, it isn't difficult to understand why Nintendo have implemented a similar idea on the Wii. However, it does differ considerably from the DS version in one area; it allows 4 people to play the game at the same time.

The game is set to a 2D landscape, and looks very vibrant. There will be a large selection of levels and the motion controls have been directly incorporated into the gameplay. A quick jolt of the Wii Remote will cause Mario to do a spinning jump, but it can also be used to control scenery objects, and also others such as lights.

New Super Mario Bros WiiHowever, the big draw is probably going to be Nintendo's claimed 4D gameplay. This essentially means that 4 people will be able to play the game at the same time. Unfortunately there won't be any online play, but it will make for an exceedingly fun experience. While playing with over 2 people may make it difficult to complete levels, it certainly adds a fun element, as it's just as easy to send people to their doom, as rescue them from oblivion.

Each character starts with 5 lives, and if everyone dies at the same time, the level is over. However, should at least one player survive, the others will slowly drift into the level inside bubbles, which can be popped to allow players to get back into the action. This is why playing with two people is much easier, as the game is much less confusing and if one player dies, the game still continues as long as the other can find a safe haven.

There's one thing Mario has been missing for a while though, the ability to enjoy the extremely fun gameplay with someone else. Fortunately that has been rectified for this rendition of Mario and it's promising to be nothing but a great game that will be a worthy addition to the Mario catalogue.
