Pitchford Reacts to Borderlands Sales Figures

Borderlands, the latest game from developer Gearbox, was one of the brave souls to stand against the Modern Warfare 2 juggernaut in fall 2009. According to NPD end of year sales numbers, keeping a holiday release seems to have paid off handsomely. In a recent interview with IGN, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford attributed the games' commercial success to the hardcore demographic.

"Perhaps Borderlands can be a lesson for all of us -- that when making a videogame, we should not be afraid to identify gamers as the audience," Pitchford said. Borderlands sold 1.11 million copies during 2009 in the United States.

He also shared his thoughts on reaching the casual gamer, "I wonder if too frequently publishers and developers are so caught up with going after new, untapped audiences that they can forget to care for the largest, most loyal and reliable audience there is -- the current gamer." Apparently Gearbox isn't interested in making games for soccer moms, what a shame.

The second batch of Borderlands downloadable content was just released on December 29th for Xbox 360 and January 7th for PS3 and PC.
