Sony: We're 'Actively Thinking' About Charging for PSN

It comes as no surprise that Sony has been considering charging for PlayStation Network for quite some time. To the dismay of PSN users, Sony Computer Entertainment America VP Peter Dille recently confirmed the move in an interview with IGN. He revealed Sony is "actively thinking," about a paid PSN service.

"It’s been our philosophy not to charge for [PSN] from launch up until now, but Kaz recently went on the record as saying that’s something we’re looking at,.. I can confirm that as well," said Dille. Its inevitable at this point, although, many questions do remain, such as what features will Sony be charging for?

"What’s the best way to approach that if we were to do that? You know, no announcements at this point in time, but it’s something we’re thinking about" Dille told IGN. No specifics, however, its seems unlikely anything currently free would come with a fee. This is a potentially damaging move from Sony, PSN's biggest asset is having no price tag. Hopefully Sony realize they'll need to put out some great features to justify it.

It needs to be something totally amazing to justify a price tag of ANY amount!

I won\'t be getting the psn service unless my friends get it. The only thing I care about is cross game voice chat, but not enough to spend 70$ a year on it.

If we start getting charged for all PSN services I will just not go online full stop

I think what they already offer will stay free, and perhaps they\'re developing services the will launch alongside some sort of subscription service. So they\'re basic services would be a lot better all-around than XBL\'s Silver Accounts, but if they\'re going to take on Gold, best of luck to them honestly.

Yeah I think it\'s safe to assume that at the very least, playing online will remain free. If not, then Sony would\'ve just shot themselves in the foot with a .50 caliber anti-material rifle at point blank...
