Square Enix Innovates By Competing With Itself

CEO and President of Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, gave the first keynote at the Montreal International Game Summit Monday morning, speaking about fostering cultural diversity in game development. According to Wada-san, Square Enix actively competes with itself, as in, Square Enix's internal studios challenge one another on-goingly.
Wada-san said that Square Enix's internal studios, which are located throughout the world, function as a cluster, much like how other game development clusters function, for example, Montreal. Montreal's development community, and other clusters like it, compete within themselves, and to that end Square Enix replicates this culture between its studios. Wada-san spoke to the advantages of acting as a cluster,
With internally competing studios, innovation is born, and we want to do everything we can to foster this.
Square Enix is certainly know for its dominance within the video game industry, and innovating within their own titles is a key aspect to their success. Wada-san also spoke to how Square Enix keep the Final Fantasy series from being exhausted.
Yoichi Wada also noted that competition within Square Enix is moving to the next level between their Japanese studio and Eidos Montreal. The two stories are currently talking with each other, setting the ground work for a collaboration between the two studios for some point in the future.
We caught up with Yoichi Wada following his keynote for an interview about Final Fantasy XIII. Keep an eye out for that interview on Final Fantasy Union soon.
