Star Trek Online Goes Free-To-Play From Today

Today, an official announcement marked the launch of Star Trek Online as a Free-To-Play product; allowing all players of the game to hit maximum level without having to pay a subscription fee.

"We couldn't be more excited," said Jack Emmert, CEO, Cryptic Studios, Inc. "Updating Star Trek Online to the popular free-to-play model removes those barriers of entry that previously kept fans and casual gamers away. Anyone can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost. There's no better way to see how sitting in the captain's chair feels."

A virtual store will dispense premium items in exchange for real-world money, although all other elements of the game (including the mission creating tool 'The Foundry') will remain free of charge. Wannabee Captain Picards can download the game via the official site.
