TGS 2009 Awards: Best PlayStation 3 Game

Tokyo Game Show 2009 may not have had the biggest scoops or as many surprise announcements as gamers were hoping, but there certainly wasn't a lack of great games on display. We've already covered every other platform in our TGS 2009 Awards, so it's time to round things off with the best PlayStation 3 game of TGS 2009.

As with each year, the PlayStation brand gets quite a large share of the overall coverage at the Tokyo Game Show, simply because Nintendo doesn't attend, and Microsoft has a small minority share of the Japanese market. With this in mind, there was no lack of PlayStation 3 games on display anywhere on the show floor. However, narrowing it down to the most impressive PS3 titles wasn't too hard when a few key titles really stood out from the crowd.

Nominees:

  • Assassin's Creed 2 (Ubisoft)
  • Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix)
  • Yakuza 4 (Sega)
  • Gran Turismo 5 (Sony)

Winner: Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix)

TGS 2009 Awards Winner

There's been a fair bit of doubt and a few concerns surrounding Final Fantasy XIII for more or less the past year. With its Japanese release set for December, TGS 2009 was really the show to prove the title, and luckily Square Enix had not one, but two very impressive demos of Final Fantasy XIII at the show. Nearly all concerns were answered with some hands-on time with the game.

Taking the reins of lead character, Lightning, in the first demo, and Snow in the second demo, gameplay proved quite solid, and extremely fluid. The attention to detail in cinematics, graphics, and presentation were great and really provided an experience so well paced that the game feels finished. The title seems set to renew series fans and RPG players faith in Final Fantasy as well.
