Ubisoft Not Afraid of Modern Warfare 2

Not many games are releasing around the same time as Activision's upcoming Modern Warfare 2. It's particularly understandable considering the almost undisputed assumption that Modern Warfare 2 will be another massive sales success; this week the game was announced as GameStop's most pre-ordered game ever. However, one title isn't wavering in challenging Modern Warfare 2, and that's Assassin's Creed 2.
Yannis Mallat is the CEO of Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind the Assassin's Creed series. Mallat spoke yesterday at DIG London 2009, a London, Ontario based video game developers conference. Following Mallat's keynote about creativity and innovation, which outlined Ubisoft's unique development strategy, GamingUnion.net caught up with Mallat to ask him about competing with Modern Warfare 2. Here's how it went:
GamingUnion.net: Modern Warfare 2's inevitable sales success is scaring off a number of other publishers from releasing games around the same time. We're not suggesting it's not a good idea, but why have Assassin's Creed 2 compete with Modern Warfare 2?
Mallat: You know, I think on the market there is less and less room for average or bad games, but there will always be room for very good games, and that's exactly what Assassin's Creed 2 is.
GamingUnion.net: So you're not worried at all?
Mallat: No, it's part of the game.
Gamers are free to debate all they like, but Mallat's take is well backed up. Midway through October we outlined all the reasons why Assassin's Creed II can stand against Modern Warfare 2; reasons such as the fact the original Assassin's Creed broke sales records, launched around the same time as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and also competed with other blockbuster titles such as Super Mario Galaxy and Rockband.
It's safer to say the hype surrounding both Assassin's Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 is exceptionally high. Perhaps it's not just Modern Warfare 2 other publishers are afraid of, but Assassin's Creed 2 as well.
GamingUnion.net, Tecmo and Team Ninja are giving away signed copies of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 to three lucky winners, find out how to win on the competition page.
