7To say Ubisoft’s mysterious survival title, I Am Alive, has been a long time coming, would be a bit of an understatement. Originally rumored to be a full retail offering under the guidance of Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond, I Am Alive spent a few years in the incubator over at French studio Darkworks before eventually settling at Ubisoft Shanghai for its final stretch. The end result of this roughly four-year process is a downloadable title which seeks to immerse players in the harsh realities of survival in a post-apocalyptic setting. With that goal in mind, I Am Alive certainly succeeds in creating an oppressive, bleak backdrop for exploration, using a handful of clever mechanics to make your actions have added weight and consequence. Unfortunately, its interesting, ambitious premise never fully evolves into something special, held back by the surprisingly limited options at your disposal throughout.
