GamesCom: Fallout: New Vegas Hands-On

Thu, Sep 2nd, 2010, 6:57 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

Inheriting the reigns of the Fallout series is a double-edged sword at this point. On the one hand you have access to one of gaming's most-loved properties, the ability to build upon the revered work of Black Isle and Bethesda and the opportunity to follow-up one of 2008's best-selling, most critically lauded titles. GamesCom: The Force Unleashed 2 Impressions

Thu, Sep 2nd, 2010, 6:23 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

The Force Unleashed was exactly what the Star War franchise needed, a game that finally let players, as the name suggested, unleash the Force in all its glory. The amount of power was just awesome, but everything is built to be surpassed, and that's exactly what LucasArts plan on doing with The Force Unleashed 2; a game which promises more bang for your buck. And boy does it look like it's going to achieve that. More »

GamesCom: James Bond 007: Blood Stone Impressions

Tue, Aug 31st, 2010, 6:08 pm (EST) BY DARRYL

When I initially heard that Bizarre Creations were developing the next James Bond game, dubbed Blood Stone, I'll admit that I had some reservations. Bizarre's background is in the racing genre, not the third-person shooter genre, after all. However, I've always been saying that developers shouldn't just stick to one genre and I'm glad that Bizarre are branching out. I'm also glad because it looks, from what I saw at GamesCom, that they're doing a fantastic job of it! More »

Fable III Hands-On Preview

Tue, Aug 31st, 2010, 5:36 pm (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

It is a time-honoured tradition that sequels are "bigger, better, and more bad-ass." Building on the success of their predecessors, they typically add more story, more weapons, more enemies and more features. When it comes to sequels, conventional wisdom is unequivocal, more is better.

But that's not entirely true of Fable3. More »

GamesCom: Mindjack Impressions

Tue, Aug 31st, 2010, 8:14 am (EST) BY DARRYL

If there was one game that surprised me at this year's GamesCom, it has to be Square Enix's upcoming third-person shooter, Mindjack. On the surface it probably looks like any other generic shooter, but once you delve a little deeper, you realise this couldn't be further from the truth. More »

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 Demo Impressions

Mon, Aug 30th, 2010, 8:33 pm (EST) BY COLIN

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm was one of the more anticipated exclusives for the PlayStation 3 early on this generation, at least by the fanbase. Naruto itself is an incredibly popular series amongst anime and manga veterans. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 is the next in the series for current generation platforms, both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and it promises to offer far more than what the first did, complete with fluid animation, fast-paced combat and much bigger fights.

Based on the Shippuden arc, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 looks to take players through the journey of a Hidden Leaf Ninja called Naruto as he returns to his village after three years of training. The game plays through the majority of the Shippuden arc, all the way through to Naruto's fight with Paine. If you are not familiar with this setting, that's a spoiler right there - albeit, not a very big one. More »

Halo: Reach Hands-On

Fri, Aug 27th, 2010, 11:42 am (EST) BY LEE BRADLEY

Bungie's farewell to Halo is shaping up to be a glorious swansong. Promising to reclaim the magic of Halo: Combat Evolved, while echoing the grounded narrative of ODST and building on the stellar online modes the franchise has become known for, you get the feeling that this could be the very pinnacle of the Halo series.

The developers certainly think so. They've stuffed every spare byte of the disc with content. A full campaign, a plethora of adversarial and co-op modes, a substantially enhanced Firefight mode, as well as the frighteningly flexible Forge 2.0 see to that. It's bursting at the seams. More »

GamesCom: Red Faction: Armageddon Impressions

Thu, Aug 26th, 2010, 8:10 am (EST) BY DARRYL

When I sat down to check out Red Faction: Armageddon for the second time, I initially felt a sense of deja vu. On face value, the demo look extremely similar to the one I saw at E3; Darius Mason was again attempting to create a safe passage for a convoy of humans by getting rid of alien infested structures. However, this time he had a few extra tools to help him out and I was quite surprised at how much it changed the feel of the action. More »

GamesCom: FIFA 11 Hands-On

Mon, Aug 23rd, 2010, 9:22 am (EST) BY DARRYL

FIFA had an immense year last year. It, as a franchise, had been snapping at the heels of Pro Evolution Soccer for a few years, but last year was the first time for almost a decade that it could truly be hailed as the de-facto football game. They were back to where they were all those years ago - the premium licence and the premium gameplay. Something I'm sure they don't want to let slip away from their fingers.

If we've learnt anything from the demise of Pro Evolution Soccer, it's that you shouldn't rest on your laurels. And I think that's something EA Canada have really taken on board. There will of course be numerous modes to supplement the gameplay, such as Career Mode, Be a Pro and Manager Mode, but it's the gameplay that's always proved the fundamental aspect behind a sports game's success. HAWX 2 Preview

Wed, Aug 18th, 2010, 6:16 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Flying simulation games, as mentioned in our other previews, can be a very tricky subject. The first Hawx game demonstrated this quite well, generating some decent reviews but nothing that will live on forever in the history of gaming. A few technical issues, an extremely short campaign, and some poorly thought-out multiplayer features left a bad taste in the mouth. Fortunately, that hasn't stopped Tom Clancy's team one bit. Hawx 2 is coming, and with it come a few changes that may make for a more memorable (and enjoyable) flight experience. More »

Gamescom 2010: Press Conference Previews

Tue, Aug 10th, 2010, 8:23 pm (EST) BY JORDAN DOUGLAS

Gamescom, Europe's stop on the major game convention circuit, is just around the corner, kicking off with three press conferences from Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Sony next Tuesday. The German hosted event has risen to prominence over the past couple years, now viewed by publishers as an additional avenue (alongside E3 and TGS) for major global announcements - Sony and Microsoft revealed the PS3 Slim and Fable III at Gamescom 2009, respectively. With that in mind, anticipation for next week's convention is high, so we've broken down what to expect from the big three conferences.

Mafia II Preview

Thu, Aug 5th, 2010, 3:38 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

There are many great and terrible stages of development in humanity's long history, and as a civilization we are obsessed with a few of them. The twilight years of the cowboy, the shogun era of the Japanese feudal society, World War II and the struggle against Nazi Germany. We focus on these events and all aspects surrounding them, often mystified at a way of life filled with its own sort of terror and nobility. Movies, books, games, and television try their best to capture these moments for us, to bring them to life and let us marvel at an era most have forgotten. Enter Mafia II: a game probably destined to be remembered as a phenomenally accurate depiction of the 1950's American underworld.

A preview for a game like this requires a lot of care and attention, since much of Mafia II's aspirations lay in successfully recreating an entire era of history. There's a bit less focus on gameplay, and more on the storyline and overall world design. Much like Red Dead Redemption was pressed hard for how well it recreated the Wild West in design and theme, Mafia II will be completely judged by its ability to juggle storytelling and world interaction. Cars, weapons, suits, décor, and even diction have all been copied to as close to the truth as possible. Graphical details have been refined to create some extremely realistic looking character models, and the soundtrack has been set to match the 'mood of the era'. Monday Night Combat Preview

Mon, Aug 2nd, 2010, 9:43 pm (EST) BY ADAM

To address the biggest concern anyone would have about this game, I'll come right out and say it.  This isn't a Team Fortress 2 clone. There's no way it could be, even though there are a lot of things that look the same. It has classes that have unique abilities, squad oriented fighting, and cartoonish graphics. It's understandable how most would look at the game at face value and misinterpret what's going on here. What's going to make Monday Night Combat so much fun - and so very unique - is how those similar aspects are put into play. The Force Unleashed 2: What We Know So Far

Sat, Jul 31st, 2010, 6:30 pm (EST) BY ADAM MA

Just watching the Force Unleashed 2 trailer tells us a few things. Galen Marek (aka Starkiller) is supposedly back in clone form, and he's absolutely fantastic at killing stormtroopers. Darth Vader is still plotting to do something with his old apprentice, which may include making a clone army, and no doubt the fate of the universe will somehow hang in the balance. There's a lot going on in Force Unleashed 2, and between all the fancy CG movies and trailers it can be hard to keep track. Fortunately, we've made a handy little list of new features for everyone’s convenience. So lets take a look at what the Force Unleashed 2 actually has to offer us, and why it may be worth looking into regardless of your feelings on the original.

Story-wise things are still a little convoluted since everything we've learned up until this point have been facts to hype up the crowd. As of this point, Darth Vader, still reeling from the betrayal of his former apprentice, has taken the body of Marek and cloned the young Jedi at the infamous Kamino. The current Starkiller seems to be the result of many failed clones, and exists with fractured memories of his past life. After being assaulted by the memories of his past, Starkiller heads out into the universe to discover the truth of his past. More »
