Divinity II: Ego Draconis Review

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis is the official sequel to Divine Divinity, a PC game released in 2002, and it's developed by Larian Studios. It marks a different direction for the RPG genre, as it strays away from the Diablo-esque overhead camera and moves to a third-person view. It means it has a very different style of combat and exploration, in addition to offering a whole new way to view the classic land of Rivellon. But do these changes offer a better experience?

Focusing in the same magical land of Rivellon, players are brought into the world as a young Dragon Slayer - a group of individuals dedicated to eliminating the last Dragons that plague the land. After a quick tutorial and selecting a class (caster, warrior, or ranger) players head off to battle their first dragon and prove their worth as a new initiate. However, unbeknown to the Dragon Slayers a greater threat looms on the horizon, and it falls to the player to seek out not only aid to fight this ancient evil, but the power to withstand its might.

Players start the game by designing a character, although the selection process is extremely slim. Male or female, a variety of hair designs and only two colours suggest that the magical world of Rivellon is not a very diverse land from the start. From there, players are then brought to the 'starting town' where everything is promised to be explained. It is around here that the game begins to fall into a very hazy cycle of repetition.
