Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013 attempts to cater for lots of different types of fitness fanatic. This means there are workouts to try and improve your strength, your cardio and your core in lots of different forms.
To make things easier for you as a user, the game will help to create routines for you, depending on what you're looking to achieve with your body. All you have to do is pick the area you want to improve (like stamina), how often you want to do it, and the game will put together a program that it finds suitable.
When it comes to the actual workouts, there isn't much improvement over what was offered in previous generations, as the game relies on a singular Wii Remote to track what you do and grade your performance.
Anyone who's ever played a fitness game that uses this system, either on the Nintendo Wii, or the PlayStation 3, knows that it's a flawed system - it relies a lot on faith. You can perform the same move, but it might only register once and this means that a lot of the game's tracking is void. Of course, the results aren't really in the game, but it still doesn't help for monitoring your progress.
The game also doesn't support the Wii Balance Board, which is a massive oversight. You have to monitor many of the metrics, such as weight, outside of the game and you'll also need to get a heart rate monitor, if you want to check progress with your cardio.
There is also very little tutelage offered on how to do moves properly. Your only guidance is seeing the on-screen avatar performing the move perfectly from one angle - not something a lot of people who're lacking in fitness may be able to replicate straight away.
Where the game lacks in these areas though, it does make up for it in others. For example, there's a whole section dedicating to improving your lifestyle away from the game. There's an entire section that's dedicated to eating in a healthy way, which is very important for things like weight loss and muscle gain. You can do all the working out in the world, but if you aren't eating the correct things, it can all be for nothing and this is something that a lot of workout games completely negate. There are also filters here, so you can see recipes that are gluten free, vegetarian and even vegan.
A lot of the workouts are also available as soon as the game starts up and with so many different types of activity, this is great. As you progress through the different workouts, you'll also be able to spend coins you've earned to unlock new routines to give you even more variety. This offers some good encouragement to work in order to earn coins.
To encourage more replay value, there is also a news feed that offers challenges, and also showcases what your friends have been doing. This is great for those who have enjoy a little competition when it comes to working out.
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013 is a decent fitness game to grace the Nintendo Wii U, although the reliance on the Wii Remote can be discouraging for some. However, for those who want to stick with it, there's a good amount of variety with the workouts on offer and the game also offers some great additional features, such as recipes to help you achieve your different goals.
