It has been a long time coming, but the day SOCOM fans have been waiting for has finally arrived, today Sony announced the next installment in the SOCOM series, SOCOM 4. According to Jeremy Dunham, Senior Community Manager at Zipper, SOCOM 4 will be hitting store shelves this fall exclusively on PS3. The game has been rumored since SOCOM 3 was released back in 2005, but with the announcements of SOCOM: Confrontation being developed by another studio and the new IP MAG most believed Zipper had left the series behind.

Zipper tried to reassure MAG fans that this announcement doesn't mean the end of that series, "if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game's future, wonder no more "“ we're still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn't change that," Dunham said on the PlayStation Blog. He also wanted to thank loyal SOCOM fans for their continued support, "it's been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today's announcement. We're extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching."

SOCOM 4 will feature a single player narrative as well as 32 player online multiplayer. More information is expected on tonight's Gametrailers TV at 12:30am EST airing on Spike.
