Japanese Magazine Famitsu's website has confirmed that according to their Enterbrain sales data, the PlayStation 3 has finally sold five million units in Japan. The exact number as of Sunday, April 11, is 5 001 598 PS3 units.
The PS3 reached the five million milestone in North America within its second year, as well as within its second year in Europe. While Japan does have a significantly smaller population than North America or Europe, the Wii had no problem hitting the five million mark only weeks into its second year.
Since the launch of Final Fantasy XIII in Japan, the PS3 has been taking a larger cut of the weekly Japanese console sales charts, even topping it. Expect the next five million to come a bit sooner than the last.
