Product Placement Runs Rampant In Peace Walker

There have been a lot of announcements out of Hideo Kojima about Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker this morning, including announcements of a tie-in with Monster Hunter, as well as a video of the characters of the game. Another announcement that came out of the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker completion party this morning was the advertising structure that will be implemented in the game.

It was announced that Peace walker will have a collaboration with a whole slew of companies to include tie-ins. These tie-ins are in the form of in-game advertising that places items in the game Snake will use.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Product PlacementAlthough the magazines in game aren't too bad, the product placement of Pepsi products and Doritos is kind of frustrating. For a game set in 1974, most of these products, if any at all, didn't even exist yet.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Product PlacementThere are a few things that are ok with this, such as the old cassette Walkmans that are being used, which is admittedly pretty cool. It's just that including something like an overly pungent Axe body spray while trying to blend in with the jungle just seems overly foolish. The same goes for noisy bags of chips lying around in the woods for Snake to loudly munch away on and leave nacho cheese flavoured dust all over the place.

Sure, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Kojima is going to get Snake killed opening a can of Mountain Dew behind a tank.
