id Software's revealed in a statement to Eurogamer that their id Tech 5 engine will be reserved only for Bethesda published games. No licensing to third party developers like what Epic has been doing with the Unreal Engine 3 this entire generation thus far.
Since id Software was acquired by ZeniMax in 2009, boss Todd Hollenshead said that the technology will remain proprietary and will be used only in games under the Bethesda brand.
"It's going to be used within ZeniMax, so we're not going to license it to external parties," Hollenshead told Eurogamer.
"It's like, look, this is a competitive advantage and we want to keep it within games we publish - not necessarily exclusively to id or id titles, but if you're going to make a game with id Tech 5 then it needs to be published by Bethesda, which I think is a fair thing."
