Once upon a time, Rare were hot property, as shown by Microsoft splashing out $375 million to purchase them just under 10 years ago. However, it's been revealed that the were very close to being bought out by Activision instead.
Ed Fries has revealed to Develop that Rare were keen to sign with Activision and that he believed it was a done deal.
"There was a bit of a bidding war between us [Microsoft] and Activision "“ a war which they had won at first," Fries says.
"They made the best initial offer, and Rare looked at both of us and, from the way I saw it, was more interested in partnering with Activision. I think it's because they wanted to be third-party, independent of all platforms."
However, things didn't pan out that way, and instead the deal with Activision broke down, and Microsoft swooped in to sign up Rare.
