Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will not be releasing this year in either North America or Europe. This contradicts statements he made at this year's E3.
It will, however, be releasing this year in Sony's native Japan. But no release date for North America or Europe was given other than "early 2012." This goes along with what Jack Tretton said in an interview following the E3 press conference.
This news will come as a disappointment to some, as this holiday season would have been the perfect time to launch. However, Sony will now attempt to do a better job than Nintendo, who suffered a poor launch for the Nintendo 3DS this March.
